We noticed last night that toby is limping and appears to have hurt his front right paw. He is still able to do a 3 legged zoom and popcorn. He will put it on the floor but is definitely hobbling and tucks it up when he is standing still. It seemed this morning that he wouldn't come down the ramp for breakfast so I lifted him out. He is still limpy but it is no worse. He has been up and down the ramp still then.

I am going to clip his nails this afternoon - they aren't really long but are due a trim.

As he isn't acting like he is in loads of pain can I just leave him to get better on his own as it isn't worsening? He is acting totally normal other than the limp. Obviously if he starts to look worse I will take him to the vets. I don't have any metacam.

I have had this with some of my pigs. It may just be a bruise, but it could also be a fracture, sore, of some thing stuck. Piggies are very good at covering up illness, so first of all I'd have a good look for swelling, redness, cuts, etc. If all is fine, keep an eye, but if you see anything untoward, see the vet.

I had a look at it this morning and couldn't see anything untoward. Will have another good look when I trim his nails this afternoon.

Poor Toby, hope he is okay. Healing wheeks from our girls x

I echo the advice above. He may have 'pulled' it, just like we do. Also have a careful look for any small, sharp bits of hay that may be stuck between his toes. Hope he's back to his usual, four-pawed, self soon! x

I've experienced something very similar with one of my piggies, Jammy. I found her hobbling about, still her usual busy self but with one leg raised. She didn't appear to be any pain, until I put her on pain meds (after a vet visit the next day to rule out anything nasty) and she became more active and started using her leg I would echo the others, a vet visit would be good, if only to rule out anything more serious than just a bruise. Hope Toby is back on all fours soon x

Bless him, if it carries on he will need to see a vet for some Metacam unless your vet is happy to prescribe it over the phone.

Maple was hopping around a couple days ago, gave her some metacam and back to normal! We think she must have sprained her foot! How she did that... Not a clue!

Glad Toby is okay! Sounds as accident prone as my Maple

Hi again Helen, are you able to buy Metacam and metronidazole from a pharmacist without prescription do you know? As well as little Sasha with the balance problem, one of my other girls, Lola has come in from outside run tonight limping on front left and not weightbearing on it. She's not a very good patient unfortunately, won't really keep still for me to check for thistles or other objects. No obvious cuts but does feel to be a hard cracked feeling over part of her paw base. Seem to need a painkiller quite often for various piggies at the moment, hence why I ask. May be a good store cupboard basic to have to hand.

Yes you need to get Metacam from the vets. Is Metronidazole Flagyl? if so you need to get that from the vets too.

Oh I am glad that Toby is ok!
Metronidazole is the active ingredient in Daktarin athletes foot spray isn't it? Whats it used for in piggies?

It is an antibiotic. I only know it for hoomans so not sure what type of piggy infection it would be .

Hmm that's interesting, Metronidazole is also used for treating fish with the protozoan parasite Hexamita, many of the larger cichlids, angel fish, oscars, etc suffer from it when it gets out of control. Hexamita is also a common game bird protozoa too, not sure what they're treated with though.

i bought some prescribed metronidazole in liquid form & it cost a fortune, the tablets are only a fraction of the cost.
Years ago i was prescribed some Flagyl S & it was really successful but the vet said it was no longer available so that's why he prescribed the liquid form.

I'm not sure but i think i read somewhere that Metronidazole is available over the counter in the states. one of our overseas members will hopefully correct me if i'm wrong...Please do

Oh & glad to hear Toby has recovered from a poorly paw too :yahoo:
xx
