I've just dropped Dexter off at the vets for his operation.
I booked it 4 weeks ago and everyday since i have thought about canceling it! Keep telling myself he will be much happier with some wives than on his own.
He is 5 months old and 871g so fingers crossed for him.
They said he sould be ready to collect at 2pm today if all goes well but i need to call them at 1pm to make sure.
I've never been any good at waiting...

I had this done on my boar about 4 years ago, best decision ever! But the wait like you are doing today is awful, fingers crossed for you and him!

Good luck and I hope all goes well.... Try and distract yourself x

I have been setting up his indoor cage.
I may have gone over the top.
I was worried about him not eating afterwards so have 3 different types of hay, some readigrass and pea flakes to tempt him with.
I have the week off work so i can watch him closely!

Best vibes for Dexter! Hopefully he will be fine in a few days especially if u have time off for nursing. Mine tend to really want fresh picked herbs or grass after ops.

All the best. Mine always want to nibble herbs after operations, too.
Think positive thoughts for Dexter and the life he will have with a wife or wives in future.

Crossing my fingers hoping that everything goes well and that he has a great and fast recovery

Good luck! I had my boy neutered on Saturday. I was so nervous too and kept thinking maybe I shouldn't, had read a lot of horror stories on here. He was meant to have it Fri but they kept getting 'emergencies' so i had to leave him there all day and night! Picked him up Sat and he was very groggy and feeling sorry for himself, but was eating immediately. Now he seems pretty chipper and back to his usual antics. Going for his check up this afternoon.

It's a very worrying time but I'm sure he'll be right as rain in a couple of days and in a few weeks he'll have a girlfriend or two ;).

Thanks for the tips. I will stock up on herbs!
This morning is going so slow!
I was worried as he is still a little nervous. I have only had him 4 weeks and he had not been handled before i got him.
He has come along way in a month and was really well behaved in his pre-op check up this morning with the vet.
I wasn't this nervous when both my dogs got neutered!

If you're giving him lots of hay, make sure he can't sit in it. You don't want the stitches/wound site to get hay caught in it.
I used some old cardboard jewelry boxes for his hay as I don't use hayracks and usually have a tray for him.
Give him his fave food for when he's home. Mine didn't really touch the hay for a few hours but he was nibbling the veg immediately.

I personally had him on puppy pads in the upper area of his cage as it's a smaller area for the first day. Then i put fleece down for the night. Only last night I put him back in his larger area of the cage.
Just don't keep him on any loose substrate like woodshavings, hay etc. And be vigilant for clearing up any mess. Check on the fleece/paper/pads for blood etc. There was a few spots for Han, which is normal straight out of surgery - as long as there's not a giant splodge then it's fine.

Thanks for the info. He is normally an outdoor piggy but he's moving inside until he is healed.

He will be in a ferplast castia 120. I have 2 layers of towels with fleece ontop and an extra layer of fleece under the pigloo.
I have a tower of spare towels and fleece so i can change daily.

Initially for the first 10 days, I changed my two boys twice a day so found it easier to use puppy pads. I think it's more hygienic than fleece.

They both did remarkably well up and eating by the evening. Hopefully your little boy will be the same.

I second flintstones - puppy pads work great post-op. I have stocked on some in case any emergency ops are needed, but I hope I never will use them.

Fingers crossed that your boy will recover in no time!

My brave little man is home.
He was eating veggies in his carrier during the journey back!
He seams a bit sleepy but okay.
The vet has done a very neat job:

Check up booked for saturday morning.

Fantastic news, and I am super impressed with the incisions - what a beautiful job.
Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for your boy now.

I was really surprised when i took a look.
After reading some of the problems and seeing post op photos from other members on here.

Thank you for the advise.
Puppy pads just ordered from Amazon and arriving tomorrow. Hopefully 50 will be enough.

Very neat! Looks neater than my boys but my vet tried to do it higher up due to my piggies poo problems

Wow, it does look really neat! Wishing him a quick recovery x

So its the day after.
When i weighed Dexter this morning he had lost 38g.
However overnight he ate all his veggies, trashed the cage and pooed everywhere!
He came out for his morning veg as soon as i put it down so he must be feeling okay....

He is bound to lose a little weight initially- the loss of his baubles will count towards that too!

Keep an eye on his weight but He honestly sounds like he is doing just fine!

I hadn't factored in the loss of his 'baubles'!
Will keep weighing him daily to check.
Hopefully he will start eating pellets and more hay today.

One of my boy's was totally unaffected by his neutering surprisingly really as you would imagine it was a bit sore!

Glad he's feeling OK, I bet he'll be made up once he finds hus wife. x

glad he's doing ok :) I think their baubles must weigh quite a bit...at least Han's looked as though they should have.

The vet did say he was 'a big boy for his age'!

He seams to be eating fine, but have just changed his puppy pads for bedtime and the area looks clean but swollen compared to last night.

I wouldn't really say it looks swollen. Think a little swelling is expected but should subside in a couple of days.
I thought my guinea's was swollen too but the vet said he looked fine when he saw him yesterday.

It's a nerve wracking time eh? Just want them to full heal already ;P
