My beautiful big boy is at the vets, kept in to be intensively nursed :(

He didn't appear for veg last night, i found him under one of the hideys his only symptom (besides his lack of appetite) was cold ears.
I spoke to someone knowledgeable about guineas who thought heart & so armed with a few things to listen for i went back out with a stethoscope to listen to piggy hearts & his definitely sounded different, i could hear the beats but over the top a regular "whoosh" which co-incided with his head moving forward.
Vets this morning where it's thought it could be his lungs (pneumonia) as he's now clicking & looks like he's struggling to breathe (he is now abdominal breathing) or it could be heart (or both) as he's now cold to the touch everywhere & when he was on the vets table he was flat (i hate cold & flat).
Because he has Osseous Metaplasia the vet tried to look in his mouth to determine wether there's any dental involvement, thinking his jaw could be affected by the calcium deposits as they don't just deposit in the eye.
His mouth was full of "fecal matter" & so his mouth will be washed so a good look at his teeth can be done, he will be conscious.
Vet thought he may have aspirated this fecal matter into his lungs which could be causing the problems with his breathing.
He will be given fluids, antibiotics & syringe fed & i've to ring this afternoon for an update but it doesn't look good for my boy 8...

Sorry to hear this Niki, I really hope he does pull through, sounds like he's being given the best chance possible. xx

Niki so sorry to hear about your lovely boy.

I have my fingers and toes crossed for his recovery.

Thanks everyone.
I rang this afternoon & was told he was still "huffly puffly" by the nurse who's looking after him but he was taking his syringe food & she'd seen him with hay in his mouth.
I've just rang again & he's still enjoying being syringe fed, has eaten dandelions, looks really bright in himself & has been chatting away to her. He's also being given fluids & has had an injection of baytril.

He's not cold, not flat, not abdominally breathing, there's no clicking but his breathing isn't normal yet & hasn't pooped either which she's about to mention to the vet.
She couldn't believe i was describing the same pig she's nursing & i can't believe the turn around but i am so happy i could cry.
I'll be ringing again at 11pm & am hoping he's going to be as well, if not better. My boy could be home tomorrow at this rate :)

That's brilliant!

Fingers crossed he's home in no time.

Glad to hear that he is doing so well. I really hope that he continues to improve and that you can have your little man back home with you tomorrow.

Best wishes. :) x x

It's good to hear he's getting better I hope he can go home soon :)

Vets rang me at 7.45 to say he'd passed away 8... his breathing had worsened & the nurse couldn't do anything.

I knew he was really ill yesterday & could't understand how he sounded so well & yet is this not what pigs seem to do? Give hope & make you think all's going to be well?
I am glad he passed by himself but I wish he'd been at home & yet if he had passed at home I would've blamed myself for not admitting him; can't win. :(

One thing is for sure my boy is coming home today, his ladies need to say bye 8...

I'm so sorry Niki, this is very sad news, I'm gutted for you. :(
Big hugs. xx

Niki, you already know how sad I feel! When I got your text this morning I was so upset. I had really hoped he was going to get better.

Having met Toddie a number of times I know what a special little guy he was.

I'm so glad he will be coming home really soon and his little ladies can say their goodbyes. I think it's so important they get the chance to do this.

Sending you lots of love and hugs x

I'm so sorry for your loss. I think you made the right choice to give him the best chance possible. Best wishes for your goodbyes.

Goodnight sweet Toddie. :rose

I'm so sorry Niki. Toddie was such a special pig. Really sad to hear, after the little fella seemed to rally a bit yesterday. xxxxxxxxx

Just read your sad news and I'm so sorry for you. I know exactly how it feels to lose a piggy when you really thought that they'd turned a corner and were starting to pull through. Toddie sounds like a very special piggy indeed. So sorry for your loss x
