In all my years of keeping these gorgeous little pets,I came face to face with something that has made me feel more upset than I can ever remember.
Nearly all of my Guinea pigs are located in the house, the only two outside in my summerhouse were Toffee and Kandy. The lady that could no longer keep them said they were used to being outside.

Today when I went to get them out for grass time I firstly noticed bedlam water bottle on the floor etc, when I looked in they had both been attacked and killed by something. The terror they must have experienced, how did something get through into the cage?

So I'm saying an unexpected goodbye to my two little angels,I'm so sorry

Oh my goodness, that's awful. I have no adequate words for this. Know that you couldn't have predicted this. You thought you had taken every precaution...
I am so very sorry to read this, please do not beat yourself up.
RIP Toffee and Kandy. They had a good life with you.

Massive hugs Steven, what a hard thing to deal with x

I am so sorry for the loss of your piggies, this is an awful accident and something that could not have been predicted, please be kind to yourself and do not beat yourself up - no one could have guessed this may happen. You are going to be in a state of shock for a while I am afraid, but please member what a caring piggy slave you are . x x

Sleep well pretty ladies

RIP Toffee & Kandy
x x

What an awful shock for you :( I am so very sorry for this tragic accident but there was nothing you could do to predict this would happen.

I know it's hard but please don't beat yourself up.

Sleep tight Toffee and Kandy xx

Thankyou,claire,cheif guinea pig,Kerrie,sport billy,critter.
We get so close to them it makes it so much more horrific doesent it.I will be extra vigilant now even with the grass time. Please keep an extra eye on yours guysx
Ive heard this year is one of the worst for rats everwhere also.

When I used to keep hamsters I was a member of a hamster forum. A lovely lady there had a lot of them, wanted to give them all more room so had a dedicated out-house built. Yes it was wooden, but it was certainly no shed. This was an out-house with electricity, insulation, heating and cooling facilities. She kept some of her little hamsters in open-topped pens with smooth sides, high enough for them not to be able to jump out, smooth so they could not climb out. This was her haven, a place for her to sit with her pets, clean, care, cuddle and hang out with them.
Rat/s somehow got in, even though she thought the building was very sturdy (which is was), they managed to get in and for those hamsters living in open-topped quarters it was slaughter.

I don't know if this will make you feel any better or worse, but you are certainly not the first or last to go to lengths to make their pets safe and secure, only to find that somehow a particularly determined and strong rat has found and worked through a chink in the armour. It is very hard to rat-proof a large area, and my heart really does go out to you. Don't blame yourself, it can happen even when you think it can't. x

Oh no :( I'm so sorry to hear this. Its such an awful thing to experience, massive hugs. Sleep tight littles ones xx

So sorry for your devastating loss. This was not your fault, you couldn't have done more, please don't blame yourself. Some of my neighbours have lost animals to urban foxes this year, we can only do our best to keep them safe.

I'm so so sorry, this is so heartbreaking to read - you have my absolute sympathy.
This was a tragic accident and you can't lay the blame on yourself.
RIP Toffee and Kandy
X

I am so sorry for your loss. =( This must be devastating for you.

Sending love and hugs. xx

I'm really really sorry, that is awful. I once had all my ducks killed by a fox so I know how you feel. x

I'm so sorry for your loss.

The silver lining to this dark cloud is you have reminded us all how important it is to keep our guinea pigs safe

Oh my lord, what an awful thing for you and for them to experience. I'm so sorry for your loss :( x

I'm so, so sorry for your loss, what a horrible experience :( Please don't blame yourself, there is no way that you could have envisaged this. Big hugs xx

Mate, so heartbreaking reading this. Such a horrible experience for you. I shall echo what others have said, please don't beat yourself up about it, I know it's hard not to. Take care mate.

Thanks again everybody for such nice words,Of course its because they are such placid animals, they dont fight back when faced with this horror.

Someone was telling me a rat killed one of hers over a tiny scrap of carrot the guinea pig had left.

They were a lovely little pair of pets,Mother had 3 stillborn and Kandy was the only one that livedxxx

aww i am so sorry for your loss... an awful accident and such a shock for you xx

Hi, I'm really sorry for your loss. I know how upsetting it is - ours disappeared from their outdoor hutch Sunday night / Monday morning. Can only assume they were taken by a fox. Have been in bits all week. It is so awful to think about this happening to such sweet, gentle creatures. I just want mine back - you do too, I know. So sad xx

So so sorry for your loss and for the horrible sight you had to find and endure.
It was not your fault, sadly just one of those awful things.
Take care.

I am so sorry for your loss; what a horrible experience!

RIP Kandy and Toffee
