After 6 weeks on his own following the sad loss of Spice, Toffee is excited to be sharing his cage with a new lady friend.

Introducing Treacle...

I fell in love with Treacle as soon as I saw her, and luckily it seems as if Toffee has too. She came from the same rescue that Spice came from. I dropped Toffee off there on Saturday and on Sunday the rescue emailed to say that they had taken to each other straight away :luv:

Treacle is incredibly small and light - I haven't weighed her yet, I want to give her time to settle in first but I estimate she's no more than 800g. She isn't a youngster - she is 5 years old, and with Toffee being 6, I don't know how long I will have either of them but I hope they will both have a happy retirement home together for many months to come. Treacle has been moved around a bit and was bullied in her last home, so deserves a nice peaceful home. I'm so excited to have her ā¤ļø

Welcome to your new home Treacle ….Toffee is lovely and so is his slave so you’ll be well looked after 5* luxury ā¤ļøā¤ļø

She's tiny but she's knocked the socks off him ā¤ They are so beautiful together!

Treacle is beautiful and what a lucky girl she is! They make a very cute couple and hope they have a very long life together :luv:

Just a little update...

I've now had Treacle for two weeks and I think she's beginning to trust me. She will eat food from my hand and occasionally let me stroke her - though she's not too sure about that and I'm not going to rush her. I've weighed her now and she is only 815g. I don't know what her normal weight was before I got her but I'm not worried - I think she's just naturally small. She might be little but she has a very loud wheek when she feels like it! I was quite shocked when I first heard it as none of my other guinea pigs have been very vocal

Unfortunately I'm now a bit worried about Toffee who has lost a bit of weight over the last two weeks. His last weight before Spice died was 955g and during the time he was on his own he went down a little bit and then back up again. But then yesterday he'd dropped to exactly 900g. He has never been as low as that. I'm going to weigh him again tomorrow and then daily for a while but I don't understand why. In all other ways he seems fine, pooping normally, appears to be eating lots of hay (though of course it's not really possible to see how much he's actually eating) is still enjoying his veggies and seems to love being with Treacle. I don't know if this is a problem or if I'm panicking about nothing. As I often do 😟.

Hi obviously swap to daily weight checks however I think they say a weight change of 50g or less isn't a concern as such on its own and whilst I realise this is 55g I guess it's close to the accepted changes in weight but I'm no expert at all.
Monitor tomorrow and make sure it's in the morning every day where possible šŸ’

A check up at the vet is never a bad thing for guinea pigs. Tooth issues at the back, heart sounds, lumps and bumps are all well hidden from ordinary owners and can develop quickly between check ups. It won't do any harm to take him along for a quick check up. I hope all is OK for your lovely piggy ā¤

Thank you for the replies. I'll see what his weight is tomorrow morning and if it's still down I think I'll take your advice and call the vet. If I don't I'll just go on worrying. I'm so aware that when I lost first Biscuit and then Spice, both times I hesitated before making a vet appointment and I don't want to make the same mistake again. (I don't think it would have made any difference in either case but I still feel upset that I didn't realise just how ill they were.)

I lost an absolutely adorable piggy after not going to the vet again, thinking I was getting hypochondriac and feeling ashamed and embarrassed. Sounds a bit similar to what you've been through. Painful.

So please do contact your vet!

Toffee went to the vet yesterday. It's mainly good news I think. She said he was "in excellent condition for his age" which was great to hear, and she's not too concerned about his weight loss, but said keep monitoring it (which of course I do) and bring him back if he loses much more.

However she found a lump near his rear end which I'm ashamed to say I hadn't noticed. It's not very big and not obvious when you look at him but now she's pointed it out I can feel it easily. She said it's a cyst, she took him away for a few minutes and stuck a needle in it and when she brought him back she said no need to do anything, just keep an eye on it and bring him back if it gets bigger and they can remove it. Does anybody know if that is reasonable advice? I do trust this vet absolutely but I can't help worrying. It doesn't seem to be bothering him at all but I'm really annoyed with myself for not noticing it.

I hope Toffee will be OK. Has the cyst gone down? Hopefully it will stay down, but might need draining again. It's good that it's been drained. I think they can be difficult to pick up as you can't really see them ā¤ļø

That sounds like reasonable advise to me. Just check the cyst isn't growing at his weekly health check, if it does start to grow then take him back to the vet. 2 of my boys have had cysts for some years now. Neither has altered at all, when they go for something else the vet also checks the cysts.
