Hi everybody! I am finally here with some pics of Tommy :D He's such a love! I can't wait to get his outside pen built (I have the foundation, and it's 30 square feet), and get him a companion or two. I've re-homed Steve (the bunny that came with him), they were separated after a couple of days as Steve was getting too "friendly" with poor Tommy. Luckily a rabbit rescuer decided she had to have Steve to share her life with.

Anyways, I don't have many pics of Tommy yet, as I've been ill and not as photo happy as I usually am.

I am not sure what his breed might be. He's got long, silky hair that grows backwards and is super longer (it's cute short here, as his former family wanted to keep him tangle free). I don't know all the terms for pigs anymore, been so long (and being Canadian), I don't know what any of them are, lol. He's a gorgeous ginger red color with lots of white. In the light, his hair shines! He's loving the attention, the variety of food (my bearded dragons eat a large variety of fruit and veggies, so he gets lots of great stuff!). Later this month hubby and I are buying a bulk bag of GP pellets from the feed store (50lbs for $12), bulk hay ( 50lbs for $3) and bulk hay cubes (50lbs either mixed grass/alfalfa or alfalfa for $5). For the hay cubes, which would be better?

On to pics!

What a handsome chap he is ! x) Looks like he's a sheltie to me (the breed) x

awwwwww hellooooooooooo handsome Tommy x)x)x)x)

WOW he's going to have a fab house once built!
Hopefully you can take him to meet a future friend, it's best for them to pick one :)

Oh yes! I plan on arranging some dates and see whom he likes best (and who likes him). It's funny, everyone keeps telling me that boars can't live together, and yet, I've always had boars together ;) I've never kept both boars and sows at the same time, so maybe that was a help? Who knows. Either way, he's getting a pal :D I may end up neutering him so that he can have a female friend. I will have to see about the cost for that :)

Hes lovely :)

I think the mix would be better for the hay cubes as alfalfa has quite alot of calcium in it, and too much is bad for piggies :)

Thanks Connie! I will get the mix then ;) They are nice solid cubes, when I had chinchillas, they would toss them around like footballs ;)

Oh, one question: His bottom gets messy with waste and bedding, is it ok for me to trim that and let the rest grow? When he wees, it gets all over his bottom and he's smelly to hold, lol.

I have half long haired piggies, and i keep them trimmed, simply because even on fleece they get so dirty! Its totally ok to trim them :) But long haired piggies often to get very messy on beddings. :)

My girl Velvet is a loooong haired so she gets quite mucky around the butt area! I give her a trim and a butt bath every couple of weeks. You've probably heard her carrying on rolleyes:(|)
I also find that daily i wipe her butt and give her brushes..her sister gets brushed and butt bathed at the same time, she's a short hair.

I'm sure he'll be telling he's not impressed either! :(|)
Have some little treats ready (aka bribery)...... and when using the hair dryer i have my hand on their butt so i can feel the heat and constantly move the dryer around so i don't burn them.

Oh wow. I had wondered if Tommy was a Satin, plus he is small compared to the other boars I've had. Not sure exactly his weight, since my scale only goes to 500g (it's a kitchen scale). I will have to get a bathroom scale and check him. He's always had fresh food available daily, and lots of hay and outdoor time in the warmer months. He doesn't appear to have any leg issues, so hopefully he's doing ok. I will talk to the University Vet Tech program and see what they would charge to x-ray him and see if anything has started or not. I hope not!

Oh hes gorgeous... :))
Looks like a sheltie...
What a fabby home your going to have for him...
x

Thank you so much :D I am currently drawing up a basic floor plan for this new pen :D

Question, can a Sheltie also be a Satin? I am trying to figure out how to find out if Tommy may have OD :(

Yep... :)
Sheltie is the breed... And satin is the coat type... :)
How old is your boy...?
OD normally reares it's ugly head by the age of 18 months...
I would feed him a slight amount of calcium in his diet but only a tiny amount as too much will cause kidney stones, something like readigrass a small handful every third day... If he's under 12 months... But if I'm honest the risk isn't that high and the chance is he'll be okay... :)
If you have any concerns it may be worth while popping him in to the vets to get them to give him a look over...

He's 2 years old now :D Actually, closer to 2 1/2 :D

I am going to give the University a call and find out if they will x-ray cheap for me (or I'll call all vets here, lol).

Ah brill... He's a good age then... :)
It looks good that he hasn't got it then... :)
Ah that's useful... :)
Let us know how he gets on at the vets... :)

Oh good! I will let you all know what I find :D

I have a pic of what my plans are for the outdoor pen. Would you all mind letting me know what you think of it? It's a rough draft (I only have the foundation 2x4s out there right now). I am thinking instead of the built on houses, I will just use the boxes I use now (we have so many cardboard boxes, Tommy seems to like them and I trust it more than plastic for now).

It's like looking down from the top:

Looks good... :)
But it might be worth while having an enclosed area that is completely weather proof... Just incase it chucks down :)
But it's a cracking size... Lovely...

Are you using the reply box down the bottom of the page...?
x

I was, I am trying the reply button now :)

I was thinking of that too, about the rain. We live in a semi-arid desert, almost no rain ;) If it were to rain that bad, they would come inside (same for the cooler months, just in case, they will be inside).

Just wanted to say, he's lovely. x) x) x)

He's stunning. lovely colour and a very handsome boy x) His new home sounds like it is going to be great! Thanks for sharing his photos with us.
