Hey all, my two guinea pigs get out in the grass (enclosed pen with shelter and a cover so they’re out of direct sunlight) whenever the temp goes up (we live in Scotland). The shaded area feels cool enough and in the summer time I put ice packs under a towel they can lie on or bring them inside. I’ve noticed that one of my boys, who has very long hair, always sleeps outside. At first I thought this was lovely and that he must just relax outside but now I’m concerned it’s a sign he’s too hot? He doesn’t seem to be breathing any faster than normal but usually has his eyes shut. Can anyone advise how I can tell the difference as I would hate to either hurt him or ruin his relaxed state?

My long haired boy tends to sleep in the open but he is more confident than my short haired piggy. But, the best way to know is to have a thermometer in the pen. If if much beyond 22 degrees then it’s likely he’s too hot. They’re comfort range is 18-22 degrees. About 25 is too hot.
I try to keep my long haired piggy’s hair cut shorter in summer to help him keep cooler

Great idea thank you. Today is showing 20 with a breeze, he’s now up and alert eating away at the grass. I think today he’s just relaxed. I rarely catch him sleeping in his cage yet outside he does it all the time. Must be happier :). Yeah I normally do cut it, have been enjoying his long floppy hair for winter but I think it’s time for the chop again haha.
