Hi all,

I'm new to this site (but not to piggies!).

I'm having a bit of trouble with a 3 month old male pig who literally spends most of the day runnig around and popcorning and jumping on top of and over things. He gets so carried away with his popcorning that he crashes around the cage and into another pig in his cage. However, recently his mad energetic antics have led to him 'falling over' and then limping around with one visibly sore foot.

I've been to the vet as I was concerned, but by the time I got there he was walking on all 4 feet again! (Typical!)

He was given painkillers, but now seems to limp and hurt himself a bit too regularly for my liking after running and jumping! And advice? The vet said to "remove anything he could jump off of", which seems near impossible considering there is their bed area house thing, he jumps ontop of EVERYTHING including a gnaw stick attached to the side of the cage (who knew that was possible!) , and falls over and hurts himself even just running and popcorning around!

You seem to have a bit of a mad cap; but a very happy one! Once a piggy has injured/strained itself, it is more likely to re-injure the same bit.

Could you give him run time on a daily basis? He will jump less if he can run circles round a room (although you may then worry if he is crashing into a wall at some point), but be less accident prone alternative for him to get rid of his extra energy. Thankfully, he will calm down more as he gets older and approaches adulthood. You will have to make sure that he cannot get at any cabling etc. have you got a hall you can use? if necessary, get some cheap carpet offcut or similar for safe grip when he is speeding along!

My first thoughts were that he didn't have enough space to run, or a "safe place" to crash around, but he has a run in the garden and a room he can have free reign of...but he seems to do the same in there! Still falls over on the carpet, not sure which is better..carpet or sawdust! At least he's happy :) just nerve wracking haha :P

Ahhhh at least he sounds happy
hopefully he'll wear himself out sooner rather than later, before he does himself another mischief:hmm:
would it be any good putting some cardboard tubes/ tunnels in his zooming space, he might just run through them instead of leaping off of things?
might cut down his gathering speed space too?
but knowing piggies it'll be of no use whatsoever, once they have made up their minds there's no stopping them :doh:

installing crash barriers or tyre walls isn't really an option is it? lol!
xx

Oh my, he sounds like he is really hyperactive! Can piggies get hyperthyroidism? Hope he doesn't do any real damage to himself before he outgrows his energy. Is there a photo of this little terror?

Lol one of mine thinks he's a bronking bull! He's runs popcorns and shakes his head! I think he's got "lil man" syndrome :P:doh:

He sounds very excitable! LOL! One of mine used to run tight little circle laps and popcorn into walls (and her perturbed cagemate) all the time. She did settle down as she got older. At 3 months, he is probably just full of youthful exuberance and testosterone... I think he will settle as he gets older.
