Too young for grass?

hi All

I was told when I got my young pigs not to put them out on the grass until they are at least 5 months old because it would be too rich for them - and give them the runs. Was only just now wondering if this was true or not?

All of my pigs are outside today, I've put the youngsters out for a few minutes because they were driving me INSANE indoors (I'm off work sick and my tolerance levels are low!). I won't leave them out long but just wondered if anyone knew about what age is ok to start putting them out for longer?

I'm really not sure but ive let week old baby piggies out with there mothers before :smitten: :smitten:
 
ive never heard that and mine have been out from before 5 months.. the only thing i would suggest is a small handful everyday before you put them out and let them get used the grass then when they go out if they eat a lot it wont upset their tummy :)
 
Thank you, I'll try that - they've only had dried grass and veg before.

They are ok out for a few mins but I'll go and catch the little critters in a minute!

wish mine could go out, the weather is so cold and awful here atm!

my eldest two love nothing more than lying in the sun and munching on grass, when they are out all day i usually put a cover up pegged on the washing line to keep the sun off during the hottest part of the day so they dont over heat :) plenty of cucumber and melon too to keep them hydrated as they dont drink very much.
 
my baby boys where ok out yesterday on the grass bbut they spent most of the time in the house away from the grass it was thier first time out side!
 
Mine were a little stunned by the whole experience too but got the general idea of grazing, which is good! Nice to see them out. Had a good groom of some of the longhaired pigs while I was out there, def. some Spring cleaning needed as soon as it's warm enough to bath them - those boys!

Had my baby pigs out when they were just a few weeks old with their mum and it never upset their tummy.
 
Both of my 2 love being outside and there only about 4/5 months. Feel dead mean as let Tucker out today for a roam but not Pippin as don't wanna handle her much as she's so huge now! :o
