Anybody know anything about teeth? Think I'll have to take Alfonso to the vet.

Got Alf from a rescue just after Christmas. Anyway, I left him to adjust for a few days and when he first had floor time, his tooth came out (right out of the gum) on a piece of lettuce. Searched for advice on the net and kept checking the teeth, but otherwise left it to grow back. The tooth grew back fine, and reasonably quickly....but it seems to have happened again. :... Noticed today that his tooth has broken quite close to the root.

Really not sure why. :{ He has a good diet so shouldn't be short on any vitamins, and plenty of hay etc to wear his teeth. There doesn't seem to be any redness or swelling and he didn't flinch when I had a look in his mouth. He is also eating and drinking fine and hasn't lost any weight. Nor is he drool

Could he just be unlucky or does he need vet attention?

Hi, he definately needs his teeth checking, it could be traumatic or he could have some infection at the root.
I have all the equipment to check teeth and would be happy to do so if you want to bring him over to sheffield.
otherwise see a vet locally but the trouble is they tend to want to anaesthetise them to check the back teeth which is so unneccessary.

Thank you very much for your kind offer :) Sheffield is a bit far though as I work full time and have busy work load over the next couple of weeks. Will phone the vets tomorrow. They do specialise in exotics though, so hopefully they won't necessarily want to anaesthetise.

What worries me about Alfie's teeth is that it seems to be a problem he arrived with....aren't they checked carefully by a vet prior to rehoming- or is that something I should have done as soon as I brought him home?

Piggies teeth can fall out and they usually grow back with no problems. It would be best to pop him to the vets for a once over though :)

Yup i agree, toofies can fall out or get broken easily ...........but main thing is that they keep up with their usual diet :)
If not let us know cause you may have to adjust to shredding or cutting up small for awhile, or even cutting up the hay in smaller pieces to make it easier :)
Best of luck i know what you're going thru i hope Alphonso goes back to being his normal self real real soon xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Note: i'd go see a vet for confirmation tho as it's good to know your vet and they know your piggie ! If you're not happy and not sure let us all know then i hope somebody can advise you to another vet in your area!

He managed fine with the eating as it was growing back the last time. However, I've booked him in with the vet tomorrow so she can see if there is any underlying problem. She's assured me that they don't anaesthetise just to check the mouth/ teeth or to trim the incisors.

Took Alf (and sidekick Pedro for company) to the (exotic) vet tonight. He thinks his front tooth may have been fractured in two places due to some kind of trauma and should be fine from now on- doesn't think there's any need to do anything as yet. He then had a look at his back teeth (once he'd flushed all the food out of his mouth!) and they are slightly longer than they should be. He has advised me to feed a mainly hay and leafy veg diet and cut out the pellets as they force the teeth to move in different ways. Anyone come across this before? I mentioned the calcium thing and he said most piggies can cope with it.
