I found this product on ebay - (( TopChop Alfalfa )) - I just wondered if it would be suitable for guinea pigs?

I have a pregnant guinea pig - I didn't breed her - but as the weeks have gone by since we got her it's become very apparent that she is most definitely pregnant. I have done as much reading up as possible and have been giving her extra Vitamin C but not too many extra pellets. Her companion is a girl so she must have been pregnant when we got her unfortunately.

I've read in multiple places that alfalfa is great for pregnant piggies and babies but I'm finding it hard to get hold of some. Hayforpets does some but if this ebay stuff is any good it looks like a good alternative and a good quantity. Thanks for any help xx

From the size Tilly is and working out how long she's been here etc I'd guess that she's only got a week or so to go. I wasn't sure whether to put this in food or the pregnancy section so if mods feel it should be elsewhere please feel free to move it x

15kg is an awful lot of alfalfa to get through - I use a much smaller bag of good quality alfalfa for the pregnant rescues. As only a small handful is required daily, added to their meadow hay, to provide a suitable level of the nutrients required a small bag goes a long way.

Thank you very much Suzy. Yes it does help! Toffee (Tilly's companion) is only young so it won't hurt her to have some additional calcium etc. Do you recommend using alfalfa based pellets (Oxbow do these too) or will the Science Selective ones I have be ok? :) xx

We use farm hay (we buy a bale at a time as we have a pair of rabbits too) so they get plenty of hay plus veggies etc of course.

I use Burgess as I prefer it (I have a lot of pigs over 9 months old and I do not feel that a feed high in alfalfa is suitable). There is no need to switch to an alfalfa based feed if you are giving in it the hay form.

You're a star Suzy, thanks very much! Any particular reason you prefer Burgess if you don't mind me asking? Am always open to opinions and ideas xx

As I often have to syringe feed pigs the Burgess makes a better mash - SS is a bit too gritty and forms a sediment - the Burgess is a nice smooth paste that is far easier to feed.

Aha! Thank you xx

Shall be sure to keep everyone updated xx

- I don't think she's got long to go!
