I've just been doing my round of nail clipping and noticed that one of Freya's back toes is very hot and swollen and she has dried blood round the nail. It looks like she's just caught her nail on something, but should I take her to a vet? I suppose if it's swollen then I should really shouldn't I? Just wanted a second opinion. I can take a pic if it helps.

Have you bathed it love?
mmmmmmm i've just been reading thru some older posts......most say to stop the blood flow and then leave......
Maybe keep a real eagle eye on it?....... i'm sure more will comment soon

Thanks Glynis. It's not bleeding now, so I've left it. Tried to bathe it a little to get some of the dried blood off, but she was very wriggly so was a bit tricky lol. I just don't know if it would be better to pull the claw out as it's a bit wobbly...i don't want her to catch it again :{.
You've helped me stop worrying so much now though :).

The fact that it's "hot and swollen" suggests that there's inflammation, either due to an injury or infection.

I advise a vet visit.

Yeah that's what I've just been thinking looking through some other threads. I'll make an appointment now.

Thanks

Good luck! Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

I can quite see how a little cut or something could result in an infection though, with all them poops they produce!

Thanks! I will update once I've been. They definitely are little poo monsters :))

Just got back from Vets and he said he thinks it's more likely an infection of the nail bed as the claw seems OK. He's given me a course of septrin to give her, so hopefully it'll heal quickly.
