my sons first pets (lara & nuzzle) have asked for some toys for their new home. so far they have got a tube, salt block, carrot filled log and a lot of wood shavings. does anybody know of any toys that will keep them occupied and interested. thanx

Mine love the little silver ball thing that you fill with treats and hay and hang to the roof of the cage! keeps them busy tryin to get it out as it swings!
They are also a fan of the squewer things you can get for fruit which again makes it a little more of a challenge!
They are my piggies favourite and not suprisingly they involve food!

Wood shavings are not recommended at all. They can lead to respiratory problems as well as possible eye damage. They are non-absorbent so do not contribute anything to the welfare of the pigs. Spend the money on hay.
Salt lick blocks are probably sold more for the benefit of the owner!
Clever advertisng suggests that "caring owners give their pigs a treat, buy our products"! Most people fall into the guilt trap.....

My pigs have never liked treats... so i don't buy them anymore.

They don't repond well to toys either they get bored easily once the novelty wears off - like kids, all they like are tubes/chubes and anything they can chew (toilet roll, newpaper, pigloo, Maxy's jumpers:))...). I use an old log cabin in their run and they have never tired of trying to strip the bark off.

They like the cuddle cups although use them as a toilet. They nibble the fur inside and the fabric outside and have destroyed the label with the care symbols...mallethead

As for bedding, Maxy's allergies didn't go well with woodshavings so we changed to vetbed which I started to find too smelly so we are on fleece now (over newspaper and shredded paper).

i 100% agree with AP,hay is a much better option and salt licks aren't needed, they are only sold to make more money for companys,a good diet is all they need rather than salt licks and treats

Salt licks wont hurt them though will they? I have one baby who loves it. None of the others look twice at it so i wont buy another but my Lotta loves the salt wheel.

Salt and potassium in any mammal is a delicate balance. If there is too much salt it can cause health issues like diabetes, heart issues and more. If they need extra salt they will get it from you when they are having cuddle time by licking you.

Please don't use them

I've found the best toy is always an empty cardboard box with holes cut out. Mine go mad for them!
