I've only taken singular piggies on train trips in a standard cat box. It really amuses me when people look in thinking they are going to see some prize kitty! I remember sitting with Milla on my lap for most of the Glasgow to Dumfries journey and having 2 little old ladies coo all over her
I think I would check with the rescue folk too - see what they use.
don;t forget to take a water bottle that you can attach to the side of the carrier and try and keep it out of draughts and make sure you give him loads of cuddles!
You maybe should check with the ferry company as I've been told before pets either have to stay in your vehicle or go into the designated pet kennels. I've let mine stay in the car in their carrier but with the window left slightly open (I have one of those style ones that opens outwards rather than down).
