Transporting question

Me again.....

I am of to visit my parents and was thinkin of taking the boys, I have never taken them in the car before so was wondering on the best way to take them. I have there original cage ( think it would be OK for a day and night as its pretty big ) so I could take them in that on the back seat of the car or I have some small dark boxes they could go in.

Any info would be great...... :)
 
Is it a long journey?

Whenever any of mine have to go anywhere, I put them in a carrier (it is a cat carrier really but works well). I don't put them in a big cage because they tend to 'move around' too much when the car brakes/turns/accelerates etc and I feel they seem more secure. I put the carrier on my front seat as it fits perfectly in the gap between the back of the chair and the dashboard so I know the carrier won't go anywhere if I had to stop suddenly for any reason.

I take a water bottle with me but don't put it on the carrier as it would leak. When I stop for a break I offer them the water but in honesty they don't want it. I give them some cucumber in the carrier along with hay as they can eat that and it provides them with some fluids.

Mine have only ever been on one long journey and they settled down really well once in the carrier.

Same here. Only difference is mine dont go/haven't been on long journeys and i usually strap them on the back seat in the carrier to and from the vets.
 
The journey is about 50 miles ( 40 of which is on a very straight dual carriageway A50 )

If I'm transporting a pair I use a catbasket and strap them in on the back seat.

For my singles I have Aladinio carriers which are specially for small animals.

They do better in small carriers rather than cages I think as it is more secure for them. I line my carriers with newspaper then vetbed and put in a fleecy blanket for them to hide under if they want to. I find this better than hay etc as it stays dry. I don't bother with water bottles as they just drip, leak etc. I just give plenty of wet veg like cucumber and they keep hydrated that way.

I have transported pigs all the way from Scotland to here in Birmingham this way with no problems at all.
