I am looking at travelling by train with my guineas to pick up my two new girls but I have never travelled on a train on my own before never mind with 4 guinea pigs in tow. Hints and advice needed on best to keep me and them calm on the journey.

well, I would say a carrier large enough to accomodate 4 pigs but not so large that you can't carry it! Line it with newspaper and plenty of hay to hide in. Take a water bottle to offer a drink (don't put it in the carrier as it'ss leak), some fresh grass, a few nuggets and keep it dark and a smooth a ride as possible.

Make sure you are happy with the journey and know where you are going and have a mobile with you incase you get lost/ miss your train and most of all.... relax and enjoy the ride! Good luck ! xx

I have a large cat carrier that I use if going to transport piggies for distance. Large enough to have a doze and you can even attach a bottle to the door. Mine I should add is a plastic one. I find this works well. Hope this helps.

I am taking my two girls with me to meet the two new girls I am picking up. So 2 guineas on the way there and 4 on the way back

are you bonding them up there, or bringing them back to bond?

I'd be inclined to just go and pick up the two, as putting 2 pairs of unbonded or shortly bonded pigs in such a confined space could be a disaster

They will be fine - big carrier, lots of hay, I always take veggies in a little box which I offer though out the journey.

I've never had an issue - me and Milo went down to Wales on the train, Milo brought Esme back.

As other poople have said - in general piggies can and do travel well on trains.

HOWEVER: If you are coming back the same day with two new girls I would be extremely hesitant about putting [*]all four piggies in the same carrier[/*] and then taking them on a long journey. It takes time (and space ) to bond piggies successfully and you could end up with fighting and injuries owing to the stress of the journey in a confined space.

Assuming the two new girls are in themselves a bonded pair, I would take two carriers and put each pair in a separate carrier and then take the time to bond them properly when you get home as you will have two dominant sows who will need time (and space) to work out the hierarchy.
