Hi, I'm taking my two boars with me to my mum's for a couple of days. The journey would be an hour and a half max and will be in the footwell of the passenger seat with my partner. I've prepped their new travel carrier by lining it with a few layers of newspaper, a puppy pad on top of that then a large towel. They're currently exploring it (and squabbling over it). Will this be OK? My concern is that the towel absorbs rather than wicks, and I don't want them getting wet. They've already christened it with a few poos while exploring it these past five minutes! Does this carrier look safe, too? Lemmy is a serial chewer...
Also, what do I do about hay? Will they need it for the journey or be OK without for an hour? And should I attach their water bottle? Should I be concerned about fighting? They don't like sharing "hidies"20170917_132428.webp 20170917_131626.webp IMG-20170917-WA0006.webp 20170917_131609.webp

I travel with my pigs to my parents - about an hour journey total. My carrier is similar to yours and they have always been fine in it (until they fell out and now have to be separated but that's another story haha). I do the same as you, towel with puppy pad underneath and it's always been okay. They should be fine without hay for an hour but if you wanted you could just put a small pile in for them. I usually give them a small pile to distract them. I don't usually attach a water bottle as it is not a long journey, but I give them some chunks of cucumber to keep them hydrated :) i wouldn't worry about them chewing it at all - they will probably be too freaked out by the change in their environment to be bothered. Good luck! :D

My boys are fine in their cage together but they don't like being in the same carrier, so it'd always best to take a spare if they've not travelled together before.

I give them a little bit of hay.

If you're worries about them not having water you can cut up some cucumber and drop it in during the journey.

That looks really cosy! Travelling with pigs is fine, I would reccomend not having the car radio on too loudly as that could scare them and if you can do it without stressing them out too much, check on them every now and then.

Thanks for your replies! I'm going to bring a few chunks of cucumber and paws crossed for no fall outs! :D

I wouldn't recommend adding a water bottle as the movement of the car will joggle some, most or all of the water out of it. Cucumber or bell pepper is better. Add a bit of hay too.

I travel with my pigs back and forth to the cottage (2-hour drive) all the time and they are fine with it. You can add a bit of hay or veggies to keep them occupied on the road. No water bottle, as the motion of the car will cause leaks. Enjoy your trip!

My top tip would be to make sure you have a spare box or carrier in case they get fed up being together. That way you have the option to split if necessary.
