I may be moving this year to an area approximately 20 hours driving distance away. I'm thinking the cage will go as is on the moving truck. Me and my critters will go in the car. Would a fleece lined cardboard box piled with hay, with a hole poked in so the water bottle spigot can be hung from the side of the box be good?

hmmm 20 hours sounds a lot for pigs to cope with.. maybe others who have taken pigs on a long distance can help?

It's a lot for ME to cope with. I plan to bring a cooler with diet coke, and yummy homemade sandwiches so I don't have to eat greasy burgers for sustenance.

My travelled from belfast to glasgow with me walking about with them as I can't drive we even waited on buses took about 5 hours all in and they were fine, water, food and hay they will be fine :)

I would worry about a cardboard box holding up for that long. My girls are very fond of chewing everything :) and water or pee would weaken it considerably.

I have never done more than three hours at a stretch - which you CAN do in a cardboard box; especially if you stuff their greedy little guts before you set off, so they are sleepy from a full belly.

However, at some point, your piggies will need to stretch their legs and will start to squabble if the box is too confined. You will have to line the bottom of the box with plastic and put something absorbent between that and the fleece, or you will have a mushy cardboard bottom and a damp seat.

Best use very soft hay, so there are no pokes from unexpected manoeuvres, and make sure that they have their (moist) veg in smaller portions, but more often, rather than water which can leak and cause a mess.

Make sure that the box is covered at night, as flashing lights can frighten piggies and that the temperature in the car is OK.

I think you are a very brave lady! I used to travel regularly with my hamster and I just strapped him in to the car in his normal cage. He really enjoyed the journey and would climb into his tower to look out the window. Do you think they could fit in the car in their cage?

No, the cage is a two story C&C, five feet long and there are other critters travelling.

Would have no idea to be honest, I am about to embark on a 5 hour journey tomorrow, followed by a four hour jouney the day after then the same return trip in a week with my 2 piggies, dog and three year old and 10 days worth of stuff so i will let you know how they get on! lucky for me their cage fits in the boot with the parcel shelf off.
Good luck with everything!
