when i got my last hutch it wasn't wood treated, got some hutch treatment from p@h but says it shouldn't be used on the inside of the hutch.so i left it, but am now wondering if it would be better to treat it, all hutches you buy are treated on the insides and the outsides.should i leave it or treat it?

I'm glad you brought this up as I was also wondering about this. My partner has just made my Tomato a huge new hutch, which I treated on the outside. I didn't treat it on the inside because I wasn't sure what products would be safe to use. I tried searching online but all I could find was the advise to use only a water soluable wood treatment. That is what I used on the outside - Ronseal wood stain but even though it had no odour, was water soluble, low VOCs etc I didn't want to run the risk of using it on the inside. So I'd be very interested to hear others advise on this :)

I used the cupeinol( sorry spelling is rubbish) pet friendly one brought in wilkinsons. I did the inside with it like you said they are sold treated inside and out. My piggies have been fine not sure why it would say on it do not use on the inside of hutches. It might say it just to cover thier backs if you know what I mean ;)

i also found out i needed a water based one, but just came across the hutch treatment at p@h one day, didn't know they sold it, so bought it.

so should i treat inside or not?? would like some more advice please guys

I think it would be best to treat both inside and out. If you don't do the inside then the wee will just soak into the wood. Don't think that woiuld be very hygenic and the wood could possibly warp over time.

would it be a good idea to lay lino down in the hutch, it just popped into my head.

I would treat it the on the inside. I used one that just said on it safe for pets and no odour. I know some people have painted the inside of hutches to make the base more water tight. Personally I think P@H h just had that put on to protect them selves against people blaming them for the death of animals. I did our hutch and did put the animals in it next day. I know its different that the awfull stinky stuff next door used on the fence I went bonkers at him as our piggies were right next to the fence. last summer it take to minutes to come and tell me.

i decided to treat the inside of the hutch, went off to the shed to get what was left of the hutch stain i bought, Hubby treated the outside for me a few weeks ago, and had just enough left to finish the inside. I read the tin twice, and it says nothing about not using it on the inside of the hutch, ?? strange,Then i remembered that my OH was the one who said it couldn't go inside the hutch WHY would he say that? All done now, Just had enough

:) :) :) I always use a water base animal wood treatment inside and out. As long as they say animal friendly they are OK. O0 O0 O0
