I have 2 piggies whose previous owner could not cope with them - one was bought with a fungal skin problem and has started being treated but as the other didn't show any signs, her vet told her not to treat. I have started treating both again and the affected one is improving slowly - my question is, can I put them out on some grass in nice weather? They won't go near my others, but would there be an infection risk to the pen?

As far as I am aware fungal spores can live in wood etc. so I know you have to go to town with disinfecting hutches when they have fungal. I suppose it depends on your run but if you do, I would give it a good scrub with Virkon after use - if you have a metal run this would be easier than cleaning a wooden one.

I don't believe Virkon kills fungal spores but you are right Doey they would need to give the runs a good disinfectant, one I know defiantly kills fungal spores is F10.

Oh blimey, I thought Virkon was the equivalent to a nuclear bomb for fungal, thanks for the advice Jo - is F10 readily available or do you have to buy it anywhere special?

As I am a hutch person I like to know where I can get my biocides in a hurry :{

You need a contact time of 30-60 minutes for F10 :)

Erm - found it on Amazon but I would check with Suzy it's right one. I remember people discussing Virkon and F10 a while ago, and I'm fairly certain Virkon kills everything but except fungal spores.

F10 is effective, i also use Trigene which is also effective against fungal spores and worked really well when my herd had an outbreak.

I would make sure the run is disinfected, but no reason why they cant go out on the grass.

Pets at home does a disinfectant spray that treats fungal in wood. Its not written on the front of the bottle so its not obvious but is on the back. Same goes for a shampoo. I battled with fungal for months! Ringworm! My advice would be to just be really careful with it. It spreads like wild fire! Remove any cardboard etc... It was an absolute nightmare when ours got it to be honest. So I hope yours clears up as soon as. Myself and my cat got it so keep all others away from them and wear gloves. It incubates up to four weeks as well :( It can live in wood for like two years! not sure about grass though. I hope this helps as I know all too well how tough it can get. Also I hope I haven't scared you, not all fungal infections are as fierce :)

Thanks guys - think I'll continue to pull grass for them! Fortunately I have used a plastic/metal cage and cardboard/disposable hides, so at least I can soak the cage and throw the rest out
