In the ongoing saga of our fussy Edgar and his luscious locks, we have discovered he and his brother Prawn are covered in hay mites
We are trying out Johnson’s insecticidal spray first, but will try to see a vet if they don’t clear up.
They’ve had them for months by now as I saw these odd specks on Prawn’s fur a couple of months ago when we bathed them but didn’t think anything of it.
In the interest of information and diagnosis, I’ve attached some pictures of Prawn’s fur that we clipped showing all the mites. I put the fur in some sellotape against a white background, which gives you the best view. We don’t have a magnifying glass so this is the best we can do. I’m hoping this will be useful for future owners wondering if they also have hay mites, as it is difficult to tell with the plain eye.
I also wiped a few of them on my fingernail and watched them flail around which confirmed that they were mites and not dirt. They are so tiny my partner couldn’t even see them on there.
We decided to shave Prawn’s butt to get rid of as many mites as possible. Unlike his drama queen brother, Prawn could not have cared less about the electric clippers (pictures attached) and he sat there, chirping happily, while I gave him the worst fade in known to man.
Edgar is still mortally afraid of clippers but I’m going to try scissors again tomorrow, coriander and parsley at the ready.
I’m hoping the spray will clear the mites up. If not as I said we will consult a vet, I think our local vets4pets are doing remote consultations...
