Treating ringworm/Itrafungol!

I have read online that people seem to use Itrafungol in two ways: 1 week on and then one week off, for 6 weeks in total.... Or everyday for 2 weeks or so. My boys are young, about 12 weeks old now, so maybe that's why my vet advised to do it over a longer time period, maybe?

I'll leave the ears for now, it doesn't seem to be bothering them at all, so i don't want to do anything that could make things worse.

One last question (for now, lol). When i bath them in Nizoral at the end of treatment, should i just do one bath, or bath them every few days as instructed on the bottle please? xx

Itrafungol is a systemic cat medication whose metabolism is slower and whose kidneys are not as robust as piggy's; that is why the cat based advice that comes with the medication is for the interval course. ;)
The piggy savvy vets familiar with using systemic oral treatment have generally found that guinea pigs can cope with a nonstop course, which speeds up the healing process and shortens it. However, both ways work and are equally valid.

All you need is one bath at the end of the treatment to mechanically remove any ringworm spores sitting in the coat.
It doesn't even have to be a fungicidal bath, but as you are already using the nizoral for yourself, you might as well use that and not incur any unnecessary extra cost. ;)

Lovely thank you again for all of your help. I really appreciate it! :) xx

Hi everyone, just a quick update. I'm pleased to say that the Itrafungol appears to working like a dream! The flakey skin patches have all gone, even on their ears, and they all have new hair growth in those areas. Squeak, who had it worse around his face and ears is looking so much better - honestly you wouldn't know that any of them had it. I also had a phone call from the vets today with the culture results, surprisingly they came back negative for ringworm, which was a bit shocking. The vet said maybe the creams i'd been using had somehow interfered with the culture growth/results? She still seemed convinved that it was ringworm once i'd told her how effective it seems to have been. She said to definitely do this 2nd week of treatment (3rd week in total) and to see how things go. If i feel they need a 3rd week of treatment then I'm to give her a ring back with their updated weights and she'll give me more treatment. What do you think please? Is two weeks enough to completely and thoroughly get rid of the ringworm, or should i do 3 to be on the safe side? Thanks, xx.

Hi everyone, just thought I'd quickly post an update while i have 5 mins spare. My 3 boys are doing really well and have finished their 6 weeks treatment of Itrafungol. They're looking very healthy and the ringworm has completely gone (whoop whoop)! I've brought them back indoors, although still in a separate room from my bunnies and other pets just incase somehow it comes back. It's nice to finally hold them without gloves, although for the next week or two we're still keeping contact to a minimum (again until we're sure that it won't come back). Thanks again for all of the advice and help, it really was a god send! We now have 3 healthy and happy piggies! xx

Hello Dear All piggy lovers,

I am reading the forum since I realised is the only online space with actual useful practical advises.

I have two piggy girls - Jilly and Lizzie 2 and 3 months old. I have them from one farm where seems like all babies have ringworms as they lived there all together.

Once I realised they have ringworms (thanks to this forum❤) I brought them immediately to the vet and their years lighted them all green :(

One week they were on itrafungol now they have week off but I need to put surolan 2 times a day. The surolan 15ml finished for 5 days so they have it now just once a day until the vet clinic order me new one. Ohh.... 😓..... they are not used to me yet. They run I try to make them feel safe. I so wanted to create strong relationship with them and now I need to hunt them to medicate them. Brakes my heart to think what will happen with the other babies in the farm as I truly doubt they will be well taken care off 😒

So now.... are their healing process interrupted that they had surolan for 5 full days only? Is this itrafungol 1st 3th 5th week be enough to heal? Do I continue with surolan when I start the second week itrafungol. They just had 1 week itrafungol so far. I am just so worried... Bleaching the floor every day, changing their cage every day... they are still scratching their ears. And the spots are getting bigger around the years. They are all oily from this surolan...

Please any advise will help. They are also growing so quickly. They might been under dosed. The vet said no showering.

Please advise....

Wish you all healthy piggies!

Itrafungol on its own is generally strong enough to work stop ringworm in its track during the first week. The second and third rounds are for mopping up. What you should to at the end of the acute phase when you do your big deep clean, give all your piggies in contact with the ringworm piggy a bath to make sure that they do not carry any spores across that are sitting in their coat. It one of the most common angles for a re-infection.

Please take the time to read and look at our ringworm guide. It takes you through all the aspects of treatment, hygiene (which is key) and how a ringworm outbreak runs (in pictures) and in very practical and precise detail. In over a dozen years of experience we have just about found every possible angle of transmission and how to address in order to make sure that ringworm won't be able to come back.
Well worth looking at, especially as it has in the overwhelming majority of cases really worked - that is more than anybody else can say! Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures
