Lucinda
Senior Guinea Pig
I just want to tell you how amazing Rocky is.
She stopped eating at the end of March. She already had a known ovarian cyst and had lost all fur from the tummy. At the beginning of April she underwent dental surgery. Afterwards I couldn't get her to eat anything except a bit of syringe food. Weight dropped from the low 600s to 560ish. Rocky looked like she had already gone. I have never seen a pig look so haggard.
About a fortnight after the surgery I discovered a huge abscess under Rocky's chin. It must have swelled up very quickly, as I had been having Rocky out so much. It was lanced at the vets. Rocky was still losing weight. This was the Friday I also discovered the bank fraud on my account. It was one of the most horrible days of my life. Having spent all afternoon trying to sort out the fraud, I went to pick up Rocky. The vet said Rocky only had days to go and I should consider if what I was doing was kind any more, and we should review Rocky on Monday. Now I had a huge problem with this. The preservation of life can never be wrong. I do not agree with destroying animals.
Rocky rallied over the weekend and on the Monday had gained 80g. This abscess has rumbled on for about 5 weeks now. Once we got Zithromax, it began discharging a decent amount of pus. Last week Gina (another vet) said there was hardly any abscess cavity left. I am still getting a small amount of pus out. Rocky now eats everything I put in the hutch and is the first to shout for meals.
And yesterday I noticed the most beautiful thing. There was a soft growth of black down all over Rocky's tummy. Fur is coming back!
I said two months ago that getting Rocky well would be like trying to turn the Titanic: impossible. I don't know how we have done this. I don't like false modesty, and I know a lot is due to the time and care I gave Rocky. But that is only part of the story. What Rocky has achieved is remarkable. It shows how right I was not to even consider getting Rocky killed.
Please, even if your pig is critically ill, give him a chance. You never know.
Rocky - this is for you. I love you so much, my brave little friend. The odds were so long, but you liked those odds. I fill up when I look at you, and your soft downy tummy. You're amazing. Thank you for not leaving me. I know there were moments when you wanted to. Please know how much I love you.
