In April our 5 year old pig Ellie had a large lump removed from the top of her back leg, it grew rapidly and was the size of a large grape at removal. She recovered really well and we had histology done on the lump which came back as a trichofolliculoma, a benign lump arising from a hair follicle. I've just done the big weekly health check and am gutted to feel it's come back, it's small but a definite lump which can be seen when the fur is parted. It wasn't there last week so I imagine it will grow rapidly again. I'm shocked it's come back after only 3 months! Last time the lump grew so quickly it would ulcerate/affect her leg use so we had no option to remove. Would other members remove the lump again? I'm thinking of monitoring for say another week to see its growth then calling the vets?

Although we were happy with Ellie's recovery/how the vets handled her lump removal we have actually changed vets since as one of our rabbits went in for an enucleation due to eye abscess and the vets without our permission/knowledge used an antibiotic toxic to rabbits which subsequently caused her to loose her life. I've been happy with our new vets of choice so far but we haven't had to use them for our guinea pigs so always a worry hoping to see a guinea pig savvy vet.

Hi!

I am ever so sorry. There is nothing you can do to prevent a lump from coming up again. It is unfortunately just 'one of those things' that may happen incidentally or where there could be a genetic disposition in play. :(

All the best with your new vets. I am extremely sorry about the loss of your rabbit. That kind of gross mistake of omitting to check up on the regularly updated medical information on any vet clinic computer for any species pre-op; especially when dealing with one a vet is not all that familiar with. :(

Thank you, yeah I'm surprised it has returned so quickly but it's why weekly we check the area/and all over for any signs of lumps coming back.

Thank you, it was a really upsetting time as we had 2 rabbits and Ellie pig going through surgeries/treatments and both rabbits didn't make it (one was under a RWAF gold standard referral practice for a lung tumour so she had the best care possible but ultimately had to be PTS), I was poorly and recovering from an op myself and then the mistake was made with our other rabbit which is actually still under an RCVS serious misconduct complaint.

On the plus side Ellie is a happy pig and she recovered perfectly from GA last time so we hope if another op is needed she is a strong, healthy piggy

All the best! I hope that you are feeling better in yourself again and have recovered from your op. In my own experience, these things have a bad habit of always happening at the worst possible time and coming in lumps. :(

Sending you big hugs, so sorry that you lost your rabbits. Hope Ellie’s lump doesn’t grow back again x

I’m so sorry it’s grown back so quickly. Good luck with your new vets.

Thank you all, yes sadly with multiple pets they always seem to become ill at the same time for me! I do know my new vets as my dog was referred there and is a regular, and they have been good with my other rabbits for vaccines. My dog is actually having surgery there on Wednesday so I'll ask a few questions about piggies then too while I keep an eye on Ellie's lump

Checking Ellie over last night and the lump has grown slightly, she also has another lump on her back. They seem to pop up out of nowhere as we didn't feel this before! I think sadly she will be prone to them, we will monitor and get them removed if growing.

Poor Ellie, it’s such a shame the lump is growing back but I don’t think they cause pain so she is propbably unaware of them x
