Hi sorry not sure which section to post this in :-)

Am in the process of adopting a young neutered boar once he's passed his final checks in several weeks time and am hoping to adopt him some lady friends - just wondering if a trio or a quartet group tends to work more harmoniously

Thanks in advance

Xx

If you can find a working girl trio in a rescue, fine, otherwise I would stick with two well bonded sows. Trios with a boar work well, provided that the sows are getting on well with each other.

I would recommend looking for a rather submissive or younger neutered boar as he will not upset the girl hierarchy.

Thanks for reply - I think there will be several sows with babies - do you think this could be an option ie a mum and 2 daughters with the neutered boar? I'm sure the rescue will go through all this tomorrow but so excited cant stop asking questions ha :-) xx

That should work fine as well, as long as mummy accepts the boar. If you can, please always date your piggies at a rescue to make sure that a boar is accepted; ideally, it should only take about 15-20 minutes to see whether they get on well. Young sows are usually quite accepting of boars unless they have been traumatised by rough breeding in their previous lives.

Make sure that any boar is more than 6 weeks post neutering op (i.e. 100% safe). But any good rescue will do that anyway. Which rescue are you using?

PS: would you be so kind and add your country/state or general location to your details. It makes it easier to give you appropriate advice as that can differ quite a lot depending where in the world you are! You can do so in private messages (green bar at the top)/my settings/edit profile/location. Thanks!

Blackberry Patch and the lady seems lovely and really knowledgable so I'm sure she will take me through it all tomorrow - all bonding will be done at the rescue once the boar is past the 5-6 week period :-)

V excited to cuddle piggies tomorrow :-)

I have a surprise baby from a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op rescue boar spending a couple of days on the lawn with some ladies (two of which I adopted) before going to his new home, so please wait the full 6 weeks. It really happens! mallethead

I have never heard of that rescue before, I must admit.

Ooo yes definitely don't want babies so will wait the 6 weeks to be sure - the rescue is situated in Chelmsford so bit of a drive but hopefully worth it - they have 40 odd sows in at the moment on pregnancy watch :-( unbelievable all these girls in one rescue - hopefully they will all find good homes soon

Sadly, it happens not all that rarely! Quite a few of my girls come from a background like that, as part of a large rescue. I can certainly stretch the rescue right to its limits, especially when the piggies are not in the best of state.
