or whatever they are called.

I change the boys every 4 days and although I get ample supply of newspaper from work and am very happy with the fleece with towels then newspaper I wondered about how absorbent these bed pads are. I happened to be in asda where I saw their version for just £3 for a pack of 10, the good thing about weston is the really cheap shops around and I have the option if these are rubbish to try cheap versions of puppy pads instead. So it was change day today and with some paper underneath just incase I have now got fleece, towel, pad and newspaper.

What I dont want is lots of things to throw away, both pens are working out fine with the same type of bedding, the herd last a week and will continue to have newspaper especially as their pen is very big, one black bin bag of guinea pig waste a week is working out just fine, the used paper goes outside in the recycling box (for the rain to start the compost process and hide the wee smell :x ) so that part of the waste is sorted out and 3 bin bags fit in my wheelie bin just fine for the fortnightly collection - the 3rd bag is our home waste as we recycle heavily so not much rubbish goes in our bin.

I thought the price was very reasonable and worth a try

Would be intrested as to how this goes. i currently use the huggies ones with fleece and newspaper, and like them but are about twice the price. If they are any good may make a trip myself down to asda :) Good luck with the trial.

I'd love to know how you get on with these! I'm currently using puppy pads which worked out as pretty inexpensive but I ordered them online (80 for £14) and I'd love to find something I can just grab off the shelf in my weekly shop :3

Please let us know how the work for you! :)

after two days I have checked the pads under the towels to find them still dry as the towels were working well still drawing the wet away from the fleece.

Will see how they are tomorrow and expect to find some damp to them but compaired to the paper, it would have already been wet, not masses but signs of the wet coming through the towels to underneath.

We use Home Bargains Toddler Bed Pads at around £3 for 10 for post operative, poorly and new mum piggies... But they have to be changed at least daily sometimes a couple of times a day so very interested to hear about the Asda ones.

I meant to update earlier

After 4 days normally the boys are a little whiffy and damp but they remained dry, the result was that I changed the whole cage after a week rather than every 4 days (of course I spot clean daily and change the litter trays after 4 days still). The towels were damp to the touch on clean out day, fleece ontop was dry (so no worries of them sitting in wet), pads underneath had some patches that were showing signs of wee but dry to the touch, no leakage onto the paper underneath.

So the conclusion is that they are very good, 3 needed to line the pen each time and I dont intend on letting the pen sit till 7 days between each clean as the norm but 5 days wouldnt hurt if need be.

When I cleaned out both pens this sunday I put them in a pen in the kitchen on two puppy pads as I cleaned their homes out. Tyrian is a monkey for ripping newspaper up as soon as he sees it, when I gathered them both up he has tried the pads for ripability - these were different ones from a discount shop for using in this clean out pen, after creating a small hole he decided they were not as much fun as paper, but I know next time to place a few sheets in to keep him amused, he is a silly pig :)) (he hadnt eaten any part, just made a hole). At least the herd are not into paper shredding and spent the whole time hiding in one strawberry - yep all 4 crammed in one small strawberry :)) I had put a second in but they decided to hide in the one, now they ARE silly pigs :))

Sounds good.. think i will make a trip down the asda this week end and get a pack or 2 :) and hehe about your piggies... they can be so silly cant they? :P Gosh i love them :)

mine are just so special (in every sense of the word :)) ), so glad I got pigs again.

I know the towels are taking a lot of the wet, but the paper underneath is usually soaked if they have wee'd in the same spot a few times on day 4 - hence why I have had to change them this frequently. Yes the towels again had taken most of the wet, but the pads had acted well as an overflow system and I think they had taken some out of the towels too which led the towels to be dryer than usual. Dont get me wrong they were still wet but I was really impressed with the combination of the two things together that had kept the boys dry above the fleece - which is the most important thing, and had not whiffed so much either, it was noticable how less they whiffed.

I dont know how well they would work without the towels, the two in the pen had a couple of wee patches, very small but very dry indeed, I would think that they potentially would need changing every other day if just used under fleece as they will have a limit to how much wee they would take.

I had J&C on the asda ones. Asda pads and hay on top. Went 5 days but I didn't want to leave them longer than that as they were pretty wet (although top layer of hay wasn't). The huggies ones however, easily go 7 days. They're more expensive but I use less per cage than the asda ones.

interesting to know, I was wondering about using them without towels but wasnt sure how it would work, but at least I know they are up to the job should I need to.

Hi
The asda ones are called Little Angels and they are really really good. My pigs are on fleece, pads underneath, then towels and then newspaper. The towels that are covered by the asda pads are always dry, I sometimes need to change the towels that the pads might have missed, around the edges mainly. I find I don't have to change the cages quite so often, and the pigs are always bone dry. I use the puppy training pads available in cheap shops, these are just as good, maybe not as thick as the asda Little Angels pads, but quite adequate. I just fold them up when they are soiled (wet) and put in the bin, they take up far less room than wet newspaper would. So I would definitely recommend them to everyone.
