We've given Stewart his medication for his UTI about an hour ago, and he's now sitting in the hutch looking very uncomfortable, and every so often looking like he's trying to throw up - raising himself up almost like he has bad hiccups. He's wheeking with discomfort but he has been doing that for about half an hour, as he passes the blood. It's sad but what to expect when he's only just started treatment.

I know guinea pigs can't vomit, and the advice I was given by the vet was to stop the pain meds if there was any sickness or diarrhea. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to ease his discomfort? He's just standing completely still and it's very upsetting to see and hear :( Is it safe to keep him on the Loxicom on a lower dose, or should I stop it completely?

awwww poor Stewart, i dont know the answers hon, i just wanted to reply and say i hope you sort it, must be awful for you to see x

Can you ring the out of hours vet for advice? Can't offer any help otherwise but i hope he feels better soon

havent heard of loxicom myself.. My guienas UTI's were treated with metacam and baytril. :/ Sorry I can't help you there.

Metacam and lexicom are the same thing, just different brand names.

The sickness and diarrhoea are a standard line, especially for cats and dogs.

Has he just been doing this since the loxicom? I'd take him back to a vet ASAP, there's a chance he could have been aspirated

Thankfully about 20 minutes after posting this, he was back to normal and drinking away. He's even popcorning at the moment so it can't have been too bad! Little sweetheart that he is :)

Keep an eye on his breathing and for any clicking/crackling noise, the heaving hiccups are usually due to something in the throat, hopefully it was just a tickle, and it's now gone. As he's on ABs anyway there shouldn't be a problem, please do not stop giving the pain relief. When giving the meds try not to squirt them down the back of his throat ;) (I tend to angle the syringe across the mouth a little more so they go into the cheek area).
