Hi guys just a bit of reassurance i guess I've had frosty on Septrin for 6 weeks as he's had an infection in his saliva gland. I was really pleased before i went today *** it got smaller but the vet said that although it is smaller it has hardened up and he thinks it has formed a small solid abcess which he wants to remove. He has been eating, drinking etc all fine and is a good weight but i am worried about him *** we lost paul after his op he came round but never really perked up. his is a good cavy savvy vet this time but do i need to feed him critical care when he comes home or should i see if he eats on his own? I also have baby food etc in my first aid kit. the abcess it at the back of his right jaw will it make him unable to eat?

A head/neck abscess can be very difficult to treat/cure.
Is the vet certain it is in a salivary gland?

I hope that there are no complications and that Frosty is cured.

Good luck for his surgery today, I hope the vet can help him.

Keep Critical Care and also pain relief (childrens Calpol/Nurofen, dose 0.2ml up to twice a day) to hand, it may well be unnecessary but it'll be a reassurance to you if you have the basics to hand that may help him through the first few days. If he is reluctant to eat post-op, it could be caused by the soreness of the wound, in which case, a dose of pain relief may ease that and allow him to attempt eating more.

The antibiotic Zithromax works so well for abscesses. My vet uses no other now when treating abscesses, as it is successful when all else fails. My piggie, Tufty, had a jaw abscess lanced and drained about six weeks ago. She started on the Zithromax immediately and I kept the wound open for a few days, but got hardly anything out of it. It healed totally within a week and there isn't even any sign of scar tissue.

Yeah he was positive that is what it was although he said it is more common in bunnies. He said something about the shape and feel of it which is why he was certain that's what it was. It had got better, but now he said it has formed a tiny 'hard shell' abcess only about the size of a very small pea which is why he wants to remove it because the antibiotics won't penetrate the 'hard shell' . Originally the infection was more widespread and seems to think it is better now as if they had operated before they might not have got all the infected tissue. he gave a bit more details than that but I can;t remember all the little bits. He said it would have either healed completely or done this which is what he expected. I think he made it a bit simpler for us to undrstand but gave us lots of info. Thank you for your good wishes. going in at midday so fingers crossed :...

ok just an update. my little man has come through the anaesthetic fine but the lump was completely solid and not an abcess so the vet is sending it off to be analysed hoping to pick him up at 5 when he is fully awake and been observed for a few hours. will wait and see what the tests say.

I am glad that Frosty has come round and will keep my fingers crossed that the lump is no bad news!

Wonderful news for frosty, and surely if they have removed the lump it shouldn't be a problem... I don't know, just curious to know the answer?

Well hopefully if it's all gone it should be fine as long as the site doesn't get infected I guess. As long as the lump isn't cancerous I guess but if it's gone that is good.

Good to hear he's come through the surgery ok, fingers crossed he continues to recover well. Do let us know what type of lump is was when you find out, if you can. :)

Glad he has come through his surgery and wish him all the best for a swift and full recovery!

ok well he's home a little spaced but just stuffed his face with parsley, a few nuggets and some oxbow! so he'll be ok i think keep you posted. x

Just a little update frosty is ok in himself but has a build up of fluid behind his scar the vet doesn't think it is an abcess but he is back on septrin just in case! He is eating and drinking ok a little quieter but not too worried should get the lump results back on Monday so we will know if there is anymore to worry about!

final update frosty's lump was a fatty lymphanoma it is not that comon in piggies apparently and was suprisingly solid. it is not cancerous thank god and now his stitches are gone his fluid build up has shrunk by half today so all is good PHEW! :)
