Twisting while jumping, running back and forth...

Hey.

So I put some newspaper on the end of a stick my GP’s chew on, shook it around a bit and chased them around the cage with it, when they came close to it I would shake it or move it away fast. During this, my GP’s would jump and twist, run up and down, run towards me and run back.

Is this them playing with me as of course I’m playing with them or am I scaring them? They don’t make any drastic noises, just what I call quiet giggling.

Any advise? Thanks
 
It’s hard to say for certain without seeing the behaviour But my initial feeling is that with guinea pigs being prey animals, any sudden movements would scare them.

I’m familiar with their behaviour of being scared, however they usually run and hide or run for cover. This time they were zooming around and coming back and forth.
 
Piggies dont like sudden movements or being chased. The only time I would ever move something around close to them is if it was obviously food and I was trying to encourage them to move somewhere else...

My GP’s have a thing for newspaper these days, any time it’s around, even if I hold it they run around. If I put it down they grab it and run around.
 
They don’t like sudden movements, but to me the jump ting and twisting sounds like popcorning
 
I believe what you may be seeing is popcorning and zoomies. It's not necessarily playing with you but it's a sign that they are happy and comfortable. I always think popcorning is when they get so excited they just have to pop :))

If you watch a few videos on YouTube that should confirm whether that is what you are seeing. Just search guinea pigs popcorning or guinea pig zoomies
