Two deaths is two days

Hello,
I have joined to ask a burning question.
We had two guinea pigs second hand, one was the son of the other. We had them for 5 years until the father died very suddenly.
We were all very sad but figured it was due to old age as he must have been 10. The other guinea pig, his son, showed no signs of illness at all after his dads death and was fine, however the next morning he was behaving very oddly and was not walking properly. His situation worsened in a very short amount of time and by an hour, he was also dead with wet patches around his mouth.

I was wondering weather the old guinea pig’s death was not actually old age but something else? And if they both got the same thing?

Hi and welcome

Your two boys have obviously had a wonderful life with you and have lived to an extremely old age; the normal life expectancy is 5-7 years.

It sounds like your son has had a stroke or a series of strokes overnight; even though he was seemingly not acutely pining (thankfully most piggies don't give up), the stress of the loss will still have affected his body defences. That is sadly not uncommon in older piggies whose immune system and body are no longer working optimally. The weakest part is liable to give. It's happened to piggies of mine, too.

Try to find consolation that they are both reunited at the Rainbow Bridge again and that neither of them is alone, and that both their deaths have come rather quickly and kindly. It is harder for you to lose both of them so unexpectedly as you have to deal with the shock and loss all at once, but would we not choose the way that is kindest for our beloved ones if we had the choice?

Take good care of yourself. Make sure that you set them a little memorial. You are welcome to post a tribute to your boys in our Rainbow Bridge if that feels right for you. And make sure that you remember them as still being together. ;)
 
So sorry for your loss. To lose two piggies in two days must be soul destroying. Remember you are grieving and look after yourself as you grieve. We all know what it's like to lose a piggy and we are here for you.
 
I am so sorry how, heartbreaking!

I experienced something similar but not with guinea pigs, with dogs. at one point I had a family of five small dogs (they were all related). Last year, three of them past away. Two of my dogs lived to 13 but they both died within three days of each other and then the last one died a month later and I thought it was VERY strange but I later found out that one had kidney failure, one had heart disease, and another had cancer. It may have been some sort of coincidence that they both were suffering with a disease at the same time.
