Hi,

Got up and fed the piggies as usual this morning and noticed Monty was struggling trying to eat his veg. Examined his teeth and the top two have literally fallen out. They're not even chipped, just literally come out. One was still there but as if it was stuck on and it's now come out too. He can still eat some of the veg (watercress, spinach) but can't eat the harder bits (carrots, celery). I've got some critical care I can syringe feed him or mush up his pellets to ensure he's getting the right nutrients. However how long will it take for his teeth to grow back? And how much should I be syringe feeding him? He's 6 months old. Other than that he seems fine in himself. Thanks.

Thankfully, his teeth will grow back very quickly.

Just chop up hard veg like carrots finely and check whether he can drink and eat. Syringe only if he is not able to eat or drink properly - weigh him daily until his teeth are fine again.

Here is some good information:

Thanks Wiebke.

After closer inspection (he's a wriggler but wrapped him in a towel to take a closer look), it appears they have chipped right at the very top, although one if actually still there, but just hanging on to the top of his gum. Should I just let that one fall off naturally? I'm guessing biting the bars is the cause? He's always trying to bite at the bars of one of my other piggies to get closer.
Thanks for the advice about syringe feeding him. I'll keep an eye to see if he's able to drink ok from his water bottle and make sure he's getting enough fresh veg/fruit and can still eat his hay. I'm going on holiday in a couple of weeks so just hoping they'll have grown back by then!

Aww the poor little thing!

You could also try grating some of the harder veg ( carrot etc ) if he's struggling to eat them.

Just cut up the carrot and celery really finely and it was quite cute watching him eat it from my hands. Poor thing. I checked out the link on guinealynx and I think it must be from bar biting because he has such a good diet, I weight out their veg every morning and night to ensure he gets his 50g a day, and making sure it's 50g of the right things for the C:P ratio. So don't think he's tooth loss is down to lack of vitamin C.
I've had other piggies in the past who have chipped their teeth but it's usually just been one and only chipped half way down the tooth, whereas his are both chipped right at the very top. Need to keep checking to see if the one hanging off but not fallen off doesn't cause any problems. Hoping it will simply fall off by itself :{

You will have to keep an eye on the bottom teeth as they may overgrow whilst the top ones are growing in.....

Glad he is eating happily otherwise :)

After hearing a bit of a commotion in their cage about 2 hours ago I have a feeling Monty might have knocked his teeth out if they were chasing each other during the night :{ they have 2 cages which are joined together and the sides taken out, then linked with a bridge made from those flexible sticks. However i'm thinking he could've somehow wacked himself on the bridge....so just ordered 3 boxes of mesh grid panels to begin building a new C&C cage. My boys are at that hormonal stage where there could be a few hair raising moments while they sort out their dominance, so a safe and large C&C cage seems the only fair thing to do :)
