I have my first 2 gpigs coming tomorrow but the company i have ordered their lovely 5ft indoor cage from has said it will be another 4 days before it is here! I have a hamster cage (my 2 gpigs are 7 weeks old) and also an indoor play pen, do you think it would be ok to let my gpigs play in the playpen then sleep in the hamster cage until their huge cage arrives? I am really stressing over this as i have to work monday and tuesday, i want them to be comfortable, this is just a temporary measure but i am still worried! :-\

they should be fine in their run , maybe you could make them some little houses out of cardboard boxes ,just some where for them to hide,as they will probably be a bit timid as they are new,I'm sure everyone else will be along in a mo with lots more advice as my piggies live in the shed so I'm not 100% on indoor piggies, anyway good luck and welcome to the forum
sammy

does everyone think it would be safe for them to go in an outdoor run while i am at work? have always been a bit cautious about this because of cats etc... thanks for the welcome sammy :)

oooh sorry I thought you meant an indoor run,I wouldnt leave them outside 98)

can you make up some sort of temporary indoor run for them just for a few days?

well they have a small indoor play pen but it doesnt have a roof! the only other option being the outdoor run we used for skippy until he came indoors for good. is it a definite no-no to leave them in the hamster cage whilst at work?

if you haven't got a cat or dog which could get them, they should be fine in the indoor run :)

We have a very bad tempered bunny but he lives in the living room ;D what would you suggest as a roof for the play pen which will prevent them getting out during the day and also what should i put on the floor (we have laminate) so they don't make a mess?!

Do you have any large plastic storage boxes? if they are large and deep that might be ok.
I have one almost as big as their nero 3 cage.
Just an idea.

you'll have to excuse me but I'm not very good at the indoor thing, have you got any old lino?if not lots of newspaper with hay on top(I think)ooooohhh
were is everyone else....I dont think you should need a roof on the run,but if I am wrong can someone please put me right ::)

Hi Stacey,

Welcome to the forum! :) It should be ok to do what you suggested for a couple of days. I had a couple of pigs in my hall temporarily the other day. I put a whole newspaper down and then two cotton sheets folded in half to make 4 layers and they were fine on that, they didn't pee through although you will have to change morning and night.

Good luck with them, the cage sounds huge, I have 2 5ft hutches although no pigs in at the moment as my lot are in the shed!

Look forward to getting to know you,

Louise

Thanks Alfie and louise ,suddenly felt very alone ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

LOL Sammy, was just having a break from cleaning my kitchen, any excuse to sit down! :D

You're welcome Sammy ;D ;D
The indoor run shouldn't need a cover, as long as it is deep enough, so that they can't jump over.
Or is it that you're worried the buns might jump in?

More worried they will jump out as the play pen is only about 1ft tall, i do have an old scratch and newton hutch hugger that could go over the top? Like the idea about old sheets, they will be going on lino so easy to clean up, thanks for your suggestions everyone, such a nice welcome! O0

The hutch hugger is a good idea! I have my pigs in a cage open top (its a C&C one) that is 1.5 high and they are fine in that no jumping. Are your pigs babies? My pigs have never climbed although they are all different. :)

Yes they are 7 weeks old, although we live in a bungalow there are lots of nooks and crannies they could get stuck in while we are out, the play pen is just under 1ft tall so will probably put the hutch hugger loosely over the top, they will be so happy to be in their 5ft cage i'm sure! ;)

Welcome to the forum :D
Sounds like youve had loads of good advice, so I wont add my 2 pence worth except to say when I rescued my first piggie, Lennie, I had nothing for him except the box he was in so I understand your situation ;D

thanks lavenderjade ;) yes i am overwhelmed by all this fantastic advice! If there wasn't a postal strike this week i am sure i'd have got the cage in time for the guys' arrival but such is life ::) I am just glad my pigs are two brothers so i won't have to be worrying about if they are getting along or not :D

erm well even brothers can fight...sorry ;D but I am sure they will be fine, they can have piggie teenage tantrums at about 3-4 months old and fall out then or I have heard of them falling out after 3 years together before. I have 2 lots of brothers...little monkeys they are ;)

oh blimey! well it will be a learning curve for me i'm sure! :)

How big is the hamster cage do you have a piccie of it ? ::)

i don't have a picture but it is a basic Ferplast one, it measures 2ft by 1ft by 1ft, far too small for the long term but the gpigs will only be sleeping in it overnight then when i get up which is usually around 5.30am they will be straight in their run and then of course their huuuuuuuge cage will be here! :D :D

Ahhh right id just make if you have a spare section for the guinea pigs to go in but make sure they cant escape anywhere ;D ;D ;D

I have put a few small boxes in their run so they can sit quietly while they get used to us and their new surroundings and it is nice and protected, so relieved to have got all this advice i would have been stressing so much if i'd have left them in the outside run or in the tiny hamster cage while at work, it helps to know what everybody else thinks and has had experience of doing, my pigs won't know what to do when they get in their proper home! :) Just one question and i welcome all advice, the indoor pen they are in is not suitable to attach water bottles to, is it ok to put in a big bowl of water?
