Two Guinea Pigs Missing

Found the door of the day-time compartment wide open this morning and neither of the guinea pigs was in the cage. We think the door may have been left open by accident last night. We've searched the most lightly places in the garden (it's quite big) where they would be and can't find them. The dog also couldn't find them (she isn't a culprit - she treats them like puppies), although it would be hard for them to get out of it as it is dog-proofed (and therefore hard for a fox to get in). We sometimes put them on the lawn and they run up the garden to their run, so they know where it is. It'll be left open overnight. Apart from that, any ideas would be much appreciated... Thanks everyone.

I would go knocking on doors.
 
to be honest - yes, but chances are the dog would have heard them walking on the gravel drive and if so would have indefinately started barking. Also, only the day-time compartment was open.
 
So sorry to hear about this. As has already been suggested, would knock on doors, maybe put a few notices up near where you live. You could also phone your local vet in case someone has managed to catch them and hand them in. If they've been stolen, well unfortunately there's not much you can do. Just make sure that if you've got other animals or if you get any more, that no-one can get to them. I'd leave some boxes outside with hay in as well as the cage being open. Good luck, really hope you get them back.
 
thanks. the run is in the middle of the lawn and we'll put boxes in it with hay in.
 
Oh dear, I will keep my fingers crossed you find them. Maybe leaving out their favourite veggie treat will entice them if they are hiding somewhere?

I would put there food in and fav veggies in the hope they will find their way back pop their hay in too so if they do return they may decided its to cold to leave. I really do hope you find them :-\
 
I hope you find them! Have you looked undder the cage? When my guinea got out we looked under the cage and there he was, waiting to go back inside!

Knock on doors and warn people, Touch Wood they will come back

Thank you everyone for your support. There's one box with hay in by the cage and the run is open with vegs and boxes with hay in, in it. I know that they feel very secure when they are in their run as they are very cautious when the venture away from it when we let them out for a run every now and again. If they find it again, i'm sure they'll stay there. On the cage door that was found open, there are no scratches, or traces of it being forced open and we believe it was left open by accident. I'll let you know how we get on...

I don't know if it helps, but when I caught Splodge and Trampy in the wood I used a humane rat trap.

I agree put notices up all round and tell the neighbours, you could also ask the police or RSPCA if they have had any calls about animals to hand in, you never know. Also read any notices that appear locally or in local shops someone may have found them and not know what to do and put up notices of their own.

I'm afraid there's been no sign of them so far. The neighbours are all on the lookout and some neighbours and friends came round with their dogs on leads today to see if they could sniff them out. Carried out a detailed search of the garden, but couldn't find them. We think a fox may have found the door open during the night, but it wouldn't be able to get into the sleeping compartment and there were two of them. Would a fox sit and wait for them to come out? There are foxes where we live. I don't think they would jump out of their cage as they like its safety, so it could be a fox. Still hopeful though....
 
Don't give up yet!

Ring all the vets in the area. Somebody may have handed them in to them.
 
its a long shot but do they wheek at the sound of a bag rustling? if you go and rustle it and see if you can hear and wheeking? they may be stuck somewhere you cant see :-\

tbh if a fox had got them.. it prob wouldnt have taken them one by one, and probably cant take two at a time.. as he would have killed them there and then so you would see blood at the very least i would have thought.. i dont mean to be negative, i just mean looking at it its less likely a fox could take them both without leaving any trace at all.. which is a good sign that hopefully there is no fox involved and the little sweethearts are running about somewhere.. with foxes around you cant really leave food out for them either that they could smell.. is there anything in their cage they sleep with? maybe put that out so their scent is out there too so they can smell home?

like with the bag why not put some of their dry food in a tin and rattle that about my lot go bonkers for noises such as bags/rattling etc..

When 2 of ous were lost last summer we found them under an upturned brick, they must've laid completely flat!, is there anywhere like that where you are?sx
 
yes there's a log pile, compost heap etc.
thanks for the making familiar sounds idea, i'll try it with their food bowl.
there were no traces of blood or anything and no scratches on the cage, and the wire hadn't been bent.
 
A mum at my daughters school lost one of their piggies at the weekend, it's been missing for 3 nights however they found it today under the shed! The rustling food bag did the trick for them!

When one of our girls escaped from the garden run many years ago we found that by putting her sister inside the run she found her way back to the wheeking - do any of your friends have some piggies they could bring round for a little while to put in a run in the garden?
