Hello once again, everyone
I have two questions about two of my pigs.
The first, Cinnamon, my sow who littered 2 weeks ago today, is making a low "wurp" noise. I've never heard it before. Its not a wiiiiieek or a coo, or a rumble or any other noise I have ever heard her make before. I found a site that has sounds they make and you can listen to them as well. This one isn't on there. She normally has a much higher voice than that as well. It's infrequent like a few times every 30 mins or so I hear "Wurp wurp...... wurp wurp....". Very strange sound.
Do you think there may be something the matter with her? She's still running up to the bars, begging for food when she sees me, eating from her bowl and feeding her babies. I thought it was the TV making the sound at first until I was next to her cage, putting more hay in the holder. I am going to ring the vet later in the morning but they're not open now (6:43am)... Wondering if anyone who might be up has any ideas... I can't sleep as I am worried. I hope nothing is wrong with her.
The second question is about one of my two rescued pigs, Sooty. All she does is squeak. She's been fed, she has water, she's in with her sister and Coconut, they all get on, I would try and give her some attention but all she does is run away as soon as she sees me and cries and cries if I so much as put my hand near the cage, never mind try and stroke her. They have toys and places to hide, I added another level with a ramp as well so there's plenty to do...
Of course I have to check her over now and then, like the others... I check their coats, claws, ears, eyes, teeth, glands everything that needs to be checked. She just cries and cries! I don't mind the wiiiiieeking normally but this is relentless, its like she's upset/ scared/ hurt, no matter what I do she won't stop and it kills me.
Her sister was the same when they arrived but I am now allowed to stroke her. She runs away at first but once I stroke her, its like she remembers I'm the one with the food and she's ok again. She doesn't cry even though she's not to happy about being picked up and has started taking food from my hand.
Cinnamon and Coconut, even the babies all beg for food from me, let me stroke them and ask to be picked up. Brandy-Snap is coming round as I said but I just don't know where I am going wrong with Sooty. Both of them can see that Coconut gets stroked and fed/ treated when I'm there, he calls me when he's hungry or he wants a chin rub... sometimes he calls me, I go over and he walks away rolleyes - surely she can tell I'm not hurting him or anything.
Since she Wiiiiieeks when I touch her, I was wondering if she might be in pain or something... she's fine when I am not near the cage (perhaps this part should be in the behaviour section, I am not sure :{) I'll be asking the vet about this too but I doubt she'll be able to help as it seems psychological. She is absolutely fine when other pigs come up to her or touch her when they are moving around - just terrified when any human is near. Any suggestions?
In case it is just psychological, any ideas how I can show her I'm not there to hurt her or anything? I've tried having her out of the cage on her own, on me, not on me, with her sister, with Coconut, giving her treats from my hand, leaving my hand in the cage, replacing my hand with food... all she does is cry.
I had her in a small cage at one point while setting up the scales to weight her, she was ok. She came up to me, sniffed my hand, took food from me, let me stroke her - no crying. I thought it was a breakthrough but as soon as I put her back in with the other pigs, she went right back to being terrified of me, instantly. I don't get it :{ Like 2 steps forward, 5 back!
I'll let you know later (in case no one else is up) what the vet says and whether or not she wanted me to take them in for a check-up etc and the result if so.
I just don't know what to do
Thank you all in advance for any help and advice
