I am to be getting two piggies on Monday, trouble is, is it best to get two females or two males? I am unsure and want to make sure I know before I buy them.

To be honest not much difference between them. If males haven't been kept together it can be hard to bond them and they can smell a bit if they have there bits. Females seem to get on a bit better but thats just my opinion. I no have 1 male as his cage mate just had to get PTS and i have 5 females. x

It's your call but be aware that two males may fight when they reach puberty and you may need to seperate. :)

Girls are usually ok. I've 6 boars they are full of fun and very loving, my girls are full of fun too but are more independent.

My preference is boars I just love them! How exciting for you! Good luck!

yeah i tottaly agree with louise, thanks to her and hels i have rescued a piggy and i wouldnt change him for the world, i have 5 boys and they are all so much fun,

Good luck and i really would suggest rescue.

Does any one no rescues in north wales so sarah can get the list when she gets on line? xx

sarah hi, welcome to the forum. I see you live in the chester area.

Could you get to lymm. there is a guinea pig rescue there. It could be a better option then going to a petshop. Here is the link. they seem to have a couple of bonded boys needing a good home.
http://www.lymmguineapigrescue.co.uk/ I think this rescue might be the closest to you.

It may be too far but there are a couple of nine month old boys in Wallasey RSCPA that need a new home. I've seen them they are stunning. :)

I would say females seem to get on better than two males in my experience. I have kept females together no trouble most of the time but the most of the males seem to fight even when I bought two together from the same cage years ago I ended up separating them because they fought quite badly. I have problems bonding my two females now - I've tried them together a few times but they always end up scrapping and hissing at each other but I think that was because one of the females was 12 months when I got the baby one and they just didn't get on.

I love both boars and sows. Boars are usually more cocky and brave. Sows sometimes more shy.

Boars are great when neutered and live with females. I had a father and son who loved each other. But I had two litter brothers who always lived together until puberty arrived and one boar was hurt badly by the other one! So I had to separate them ... which meant another hutch! A work colleague has just had the same thing happen to her with her two boy piggies.

Sows are usually fine because they have a pecking order. But I had an occasion when putting two adult females together - a scrap occurred straightaway so I had to separate them. Then another time I adopted two females who had never met each other before, popped them in the same carrying box and hey presto everything was fine! They were Coronets so quite placid.

All piggies have different personalities ... and has been suggested above, think about a couple of rescue pigges which have already been matched by the rescue centre.
Let us know how you get on.

we have all boars 11 of the little monsters some are really friendly and eat out of my hand others run and hide as they have been mistreated inthe past and are very scared of humans >:(.
we also have 4 boars together that was already bonded when i got them and they get on great too.

Had a look at both rehoming places and both are extremely difficult for me to get to as I am reliable on public transport :(

thats a shame, it is awkward when you don't drive.
I was in the PAH by the sainsbury's (on the outskirts of chester) on friday, they had a couple of adoption boars in there. they might be worth a look. :)

DicandDom has two rescue boars that need rehoming in North Wales, she posted about them in the rescue section. :) They are lovely. If transport is an issue I'm sure we could get two to you with a piggy train. :)

Well I have 2 females and my friend has 2 males. We compare them all the time and to be honest, there doesn't seem to be much difference. I do think though that females are easier to bond than males. My friends boars are brothers so they get on fine O0

I have two males and they are very friendly, BUT they do have the odd squabble so if you do decide on two boars, you have to be prepared for this. Ive had boars and sows and i have to say that boars are definitely more confident and sows more skittish. Also, the bonus with having sows is that if you can extend your cage or buy a bigger one from the start, you can let your little family grow as sows take to other sows very well. Boars smell a bit more too, but to be honest, its all down to personal choice.

There is a lady called Vicky who breeds but also has rescue Piggy's near colwn bay think the village is called modchre or something like that.If you want her number I can pass it on to you later as I'm at work at the moment( on my lunch )
