Hey everyone,

how are you all doing? Well I hope. I have some good news............I got two new guina pig cages and a new guinea pig! I went to the pet store yesterday to purchase a cage for Ted, and well I asked the store clerk if they had any guinea pigs, and he brought a girl and so I took her! She is gorgoeus, I'm not sure of the breed yet, but she is blonde and white, I will post a couple pics of her on the photo gallery board. I couldn't say no to taking her! She has red eyes and she's just a year old. There is only one slight problem..........I think she is pregnant! :-\ She is rather chunky and when I pick her up her sides buldge out and her tummy is really squishy. I am taking her to the vet on Saturday to confirm the pregancy. If she is pregnant, I'm guessing that she is pretty far aling because she is a chunky little thing. She is doing well though, still getting used ot everything and I put her and Ted's cages side by side so they could smell eachother. She is very timid and she lets me pet her and hold her without making much of a fuss. I even trimmed her nails lastnight because they were very long. However, if she is pregnant, I will have to ask the vet all kinds of q's, such as what kinds of foods I can/can't give her, if I can handle her or not when she's closer to giving birth, etc. I am already attached to her so I don't want ot give her up, I just think I might need some help with the babies and such. Anyway I named her Isabelle and she is such a sweetie! :smitten: I haven't put her and Ted face to face yet, not sure when it's okay to do that............. I will let you all know what the vet says Saturday, thanks!

Hi Leslie,

Is Ted neutered? If this girl has been in the pet shop for a while then she would probably be chunky from not getting exercise. Hope she isn't pregnant if she is a year old and pregnant then its not a good sign to be honest as she is a bit too old for breeding.

Fingers crossed she's just a porky girl. You'll have to weigh her and let us know. :)

Do you mean too old for a first breed S&T? As a year may be too old for a first litter, but not for a second or third. And who knows, if the poor pig has been in the shop for a while, then it could be its 2nd litter :(

Hope it all turns out ok anyway...

Good luck.

Hi Louise,

no Ted is not neutered but they are in seperate cages. I thought she might be getting chukny from not much exercise, too but the store clerk said that she has been getting chunky, and she has only been there for about a month. I guess a lady brought her in, along with about 4 other guinea pigs, and I guess that the lady didn't have enough common sense to put the females in one cage and the males in another- she just had them all in one cage! So..............I will have to wait and see. So if she is pregant, and she is a year old, do you think the babies will come out healthy? I'm concerned now, and hoping that the babies will be okay since shei s a little older. Yeah I will let you nkow how it goes Saturday. Other than that she seems really happy, today when I was holding her she purred, chutted, and chattered her teeth lol. She is very timid and cute, and a gorgeous girl! I will keep you updated!

Leslie :)

Its not that the babys wont come out healthy, its that at 1yr old, a female may be too old for a first litter, and her pelvic bones may have seised together, meaning it may kill the mother trying to give birth.

However, sometimes you are lucky and get away with it, But who knows that this would be her first litter? She may have had another one already?

Do not put her and Ted anywhere near one another out the cage. It takes a split second for the female to get pregnant if she isn't already. Even if you think she's pregnant don't put them together.

It's a pity you went and bought one from a pet store that might be pregnant - what will happen if she has a large litter - you previously had trouble getting a decent cage for one piggy, what happens if you end up with 10?

Yeah I know, and maybe I shouldn't have gotten her. Well if she has a liter of 10, then I will probably give some away. I thought piggies only had 3 or 4 babies at one time...............? Thanks for the advice to not put and Ted together outside the cages, I wasn't sure about that. Yes I did have trouble getting a descent cage but I got some extra money back from the government and went and got her, too. I guess I felt sorry for her in there and didn't want her to keep breeding if she has more babies.

To tomcat-

that's a scary thought and I didn't know that about her being a year old and pregnant, possibly. I hope nohting goes wrong, this is why I am going to the vet on Saturday.

Thanks, he is alot happier, it seems. He is running around and playing more now. Yeah she is going to the vet Saturday morning. She seems fine other than that, no scratching, no red marks anywhere, beautiful girl. BTW dafscotslass, your piggy, Bonnie is gorgeous! I saw her in the forum where you posted her pic to have that nice lady do a portrait of her. She's a cutie!

Hey all,

well here is an update on Isabelle- she isn't pregnant! The vet felt around, checked her heart rate, and he said he couldn't feel a pregnancy. He said sometimes they can hide it under thier rib cage but that it is highly unlikely. I guess she's just pudgey lol. Kind of relieved that she isn't pregnant because not sure of how many babies she would have had. etc. But they are both doing well. Isabelle is doing really well with me handeling her, she just does this weird thing sometimes where when I massage her backside or her sides she will squeak liek she is in pain. And sometimes when I look over her furr she wheaks kinda loud but the vet did that, too and she didn't do anything. She hardly ever itches, so I dunno. I don't plan on getting Ted neutered anytime soon, for now they can smell each other and say hi through their cages.
To sqeeker- I got them both a descent sized cage. I'm going to post more pics of them both today on the photo gallery board. Sorry I didn't get back to you all sooner, had a busy weekend with working and the fourth of July!
