Basically I just would love as much advice as possible as I want to make sure neither of the boys will get an infection. I have a lot of c and c cage fleeces with the wadding inbetween, yet worry that I may not be able to change them often enough. I have read online that some people use towels but I was worried about how obviously they stay wet, so I can imagine they'd need changed two or three times a day at least. I don't mind buying a lot of towels but I just wanted to know if they were good enough and what kind of things other forum users have used.

I just really would like some advice on options for their bedding and how often I would change the fleece with the wadding. Thank you

Hi! You want to keep the surface clean and light-coloured in the first 2-3 days post-op until the operation wounds start knitting; after that, I would recommend to go back to your normal bedding, but change the liner and cosies more frequently and be very diligent with poo patrolling twice daily for the first weel. Why don't you get a pack of plain puppy pads and line their cages with them (especially the bedding area), so you can change the pads twice daily until you can go back to their normal bedding? It would save you a lot of washing. Light coloured fleece with an absorbent underlay is also an option - just as long as you can spot any blood drops, bloody pees, gnawed open wounds etc. easily (which they shouldn't have if all goes well!) in the first days.

I've poo patrolled my recently neutered Nye's cage twice daily and changed his cosies and bedding area once daily, flipping any pads over in the evening, so the sleeping surface was clean overnight. His stitches were hidden by the vet, so there was very little risk of infection. After that, I did change thing every two days for the first week and then went back to a twice weekly clean.

Here is a picture of my Nye the day after his op (which I had done at the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton). Nye is now coming up to 6 weeks post-op.

Thank you so much for your advice! All of my fleeces with wadding are light coloured and have a lighter coloured fleece on the opposite side so I can just turn them to the even lighter side after using puppy pads. I sometimes spot clean the poos twice a day when I don't have a full day at uni so it won't be too different from normal. Flipping over the cosies is also a good idea, thank you.

I wish Nye a speedy recovery! He seems to be doing really well already thanks to how you've looked after him.

Nye is doing really well thanks to a great vet! I haven't minded trecking out to Northampton on the train to pick him and Nosgan up again in the late afternoon, as it has been well worth it. Nye's had a perfect recovery.

All the best for your two boys!

I'm really lucky to have a good exotic vet really close by! That sounds like such a long journey but they're more than worth it! I'm going to be creating another smaller c and c cage for one of the boys whilst they are recovering for a little while. I'm attatching it onto the current cage so they can see one another still and moving the food, water and bedding areas so they can still be near one another.
