Two old boars

I have just taken on an old boar (over 5) and already have another one over 5. They are very laid back and gentle boys so I thought it would be nice if they could live together. Because they are both old and so placid I just put them in a run together in the garden (normally I would get them used to being next to each other but thought I would take a risk with these two). They have been in the run for a couple of hours and it went very well. There was a lot of mounting from one but the other one just seemed to put up with it. When he had had enough he just threw his head back and chucked him off! I have now put them in a hutch together which is all wire fronted so I can watch them closely from the window. My dilemma is do I leave them together overnight? I am a little nervous about this because all the time I can watch them I feel happy but I can't sit up all night. If I do seperate them for the night would it put them back a step in the bonding process?
 
from my experience putting them together and splitting them again can set them back. If you can watch them for a good fews hours and they seem fine they should be ok. x
 
It sounds hopeful as there wasn't an instant fight. I think you are probably right to be nervous and watch them very closely. Seeing as they are both "old" boys and placid, then fingers crossed all will work out well for them and they can be friends. Give them lots of lovely veg, grass and hay to eat and that will prove a distraction to them!

Just a thought, but is the hutch you put them in neutral territory? Just asking, because if it isn't then one piggy could become over protective of the bedroom, for example.

It will be interesting to know how it goes for them both. Please keep us in the picture.
 
The hutch is neutral and I removed the solid bedroom door and replaced it with wire so the whole of the hutch is the same with nowhere to hide and become territorial. I know g.pigs like to hide and all my hutches have hidey holes but just while these two are bonding I thought it best to have it all open. The one who was doing all the mounting (Merlin) is flat out sleeping. I think he has worn himself out! They are at seperate ends of the hutch but they have shared the food bowl so I am quite hopeful this will work out. I really hope it does because it would be lovely if they had a friend to spend their twilight years with.
 
I think to move the hiding place is quite a good idea, as mine also get territorial over the sleeping area
 
Well, I left them together overnight. Woke up at 6am and my first thought was are they ok? so went out in my pyjamas to uncover them and they were fine. Long may it last. I will put them in the run together again today.
 
Excellent News, also glad its not just me that totters out to the pigs in pjs.
 
Here they are together. They have been in the run and are now back in their hutch munching on grass.



Is Basil on the left a Peruvian?
