So today has been one of those days. Mavis was showing signs of hay poke last night so we had a vet appointment this morning. The vet removed some hay which was stuck at the back of her eye and she is on antibiotic eye drops (she is already on long term metacam).

Then I got home this evening to find Georgie's blind eye was all swollen and red. The vet hasn't got any appointments until Monday but offered to look at him after tonight's consultations if I was willing to leave him there overnight. So my trio, including Mavis, are staying the night at Ashleigh Vets.

Mavis is also booked in for another ultrasound to look at her bladder again. She was diagnosed with a growth in her bladder 8 months ago. She is showing no signs of discomfort, hasn't lost any weight and no longer has blood in her urine (although she is 0.4ml of metacam twice daily). So the vet wants to take a look to see what is going on.

I can see that this is going to be expensive!

oh dear @YvonneBlue what a shocking day for you. I’m sure they will all be fine at the vets overnight. Hope everyone gets well soon.
Thank you. I hate leaving them at the vet but know I couldn't have Georgie in pain until Monday.

I wonder what he’s done to himself, poor fellow.
I'm hoping it's just hay poke and nothing more sinister. He was fine last night when he was out for a cuddle. I only noticed when I got him out for floor time tonight.

Very sorry for all your piggy emergencies and worries. It never rains but pours, doesn't it?

But glad that you have such a great vet who is willing to go way beyond. Fingers very firmly crossed for all your patients!

I've left mine with Ashleigh when they've needed extra care. They'll be fine. You'll get a 'school report' with input and output! TMI!

Hope all your piggies are back to normal soon.

Oh dear, many healing wheeks for your piggies and your bank balance! X

Oh no, what a day you’ve had. I think you’ve done the right thing leaving them at the vets, healing vibes being sent to your poorly piggies x

We have just picked up George, Mavis and Peggy from the vet. Georgie has an ulcer on his eye and has metacam and antibiotic drops for 7 days. He is going back for a review on Tuesday when Mavis has her ultrasound.

They are currently all sulking, I am definitely in the dog house for leaving them with the vet overnight.

All the best!

I would strongly recommend to get some artificial tear gel from a pharmacy. It is what Kim Maddock always prescribes for my own hay poke piggies and what in my own experience really makes a difference with the healing process!
Use the lubrication 3-6 times a day (depending on the severity) but always wait at least half an hour after the application of the antibiotic drops to ensure that they are fully absorbed. Gel is much easier to apply and longer lasting.

Here is Begw with her recent ulcerated hay poke she developed:
1) Monday 27th January (with a red area in the corner where her hay poke is; surface ulcer is mostly cleared and only sitting on the poke hole but the ulceration underneath the eye surface is still fully there)
2) Thursday 20th (ulcer mostly cleared but the eye is still somewhat dull on the inside and needs a bit more treatment to clear fully)

Piggies are thankfully very forgiving once they feel better again! :)

They will forgive you (eventually). Poor Georgie. Great that you got him swift attention as that will be sore for him.

Thanks for the advice, I will go to the pharmacy today for the artificial tear gel.

Sorry to hear about mavis and georgie, I hope they recover quickly. I know what you mean about expensive bills, mine have cost me a small fortune last month with vet bills x

Oh goodness, sorry I completely missed this, what a stressful wknd for you with vets and the weather! Hope Mavis and Georgie are doing ok xx

Mavis and Georgie both seem to be doing ok. Georgie isn't keen on the metacam but the eye drops are easy as he is blind in the eye that is ulcerated, so can't see me coming towards him with the bottle. Mavis is no trouble at all, she is a very laid back piggy and takes her meds like a good girl.

Mavis is having her ultrasound tomorrow and Georgie will keep her company and get his eye checked.

What a drama - fingers crossed it all goes well tomorrow for both piggies.
And what is up with Georgie - I thought all piggies like Metacam?!
