I went out to do some Christmas shopping with a friend and stopped by the pet store to check out the animals. Of course, I always check out the guinea pigs because they're so cute, and today I happened to spy a shared enclosure with several female pigs a few months old, and one very obvious male pig in with them! I mean, REALLY? All those girls are surely pregnant by now... they'll be sold to unsuspecting people who will end up bringing the babies back to the pet store who will then basically get more sales stock without having to pay for them. It just makes me mad because it's so obviously negligent... there are other pet stores in my area that, although they are still selling for profit, make a much better effort to avoid unplanned pregnancies, etc. My pigs are actually pet store pigs (I was too inexperienced to think of rescuing my initial pair of pigs, and since then I've always been looking to bond a new pig with a bereaved pig and the one area rescue only offers already bonded pairs, and there are not a lot of options as far as guinea pig rescues in Ontario), but at least I only go to the pet store that separates by gender (has boys in one store, girls in another, they are separated prior to shipping) and where I never see pigs that have runny eyes, runny noses, fungal infections, etc. If that one chain can separate them as babies and keep them separate and not have pigs available that are obviously ill, why can't the other? Ironically, the store with the higher standards actually charges less for their pigs that the one that constantly has sick-looking, potentially pregnant pigs! Grrrr... just had to vent. I will probably send them an e-mail, but I know it won't accomplish much.

I am a new piggy owner and I wish I could save them all. My hubby unfortunately has to have a say! I lost my newest little girl this week and I learned some stuff the hard way. I loved her so much and miss her kisses and weeking when a bag crinkled. But I will be on the lookout for pig injustices.

Yeah, I want to save them too... unfortunately I don't have room for more than a pair, I know firsthand that a pig with health issues can be a real financial drain, seeing as Sundae has ongoing antibiotics and has had some major health issues in her lifetime, and I realize it just perpetuates the problem because it just encourages them to acquire more pigs to keep them in the same bad conditions. I think there is just a terrible attitude about animals (and particularly small animals) as being somehow disposable pets. I think guinea pigs in North America specifically have this image problem and it leads to pigs not having a good quality of life generally. They are really seen as disposable pets for children, and I think a lot of them end up living alone in small cages once the kids get bored with them. Most people I know are shocked that my pigs actually get vet care- a lot of people didn't even realize that there are vets that treat guinea pigs, and the attitude I run into a lot is, "Why? You can just get another guinea pig for twenty-five dollars." I heard that a lot when Sundae was ill and had repeat dentals and abscess surgery and followups that were not cheap. I'm usually just flippant and say that they are not making any more Sundaes so I choose just to take good care of the one-of-a-kind model that I have, but it actually really bothers me that the majority seem to look at her as 'just a guinea pig' that can be replaced by any other guinea pig rather than as the unique individual that she is, and that as a living thing she deserves competent vet care and a family that cares about her and sees her as a living thing with rights rather than an item to be replaced once she's 'broken' and no longer convenient! Sorry for the rant... it hits a nerve. I've been a small-animal owner all my life and it really frustrates me that, where I live, they are really regarded as 'toys for kids' and not as having the same status as a dog or cat or more common animal.

After losing my Daisy after having her a month, I was devastated, felt like I failed her and got a crash course in how much care they could possibly need. I wish there was more I could have done for her in the middle of the night on the weekend. I cringe thinking of a small cage, lonely lil piggies a kid is bored of. I want to save the world!

Me too I would love to win the lottery and open up an animal sanctuary to save all these animals it makes me so angry and upset when I think of all the unhappy animals out there that try to please their owner and get nothing but abuse, the one thing I really can't stand is gumtree free ad pets! I seem to rant on so much about it but it really does get to me because I rehomed 2 gumtree free guinea pigs and when I look at their little faces I just cannot understand why someone would hand Their pet over to someone they don't know ask no questions and actually go to sleep at night with a clear concience. I understand circumstances change and you never know what's around the corner but there's better ways to rehome an animal than that x

Count me in! Always said if I won lottery I would open"Daisy Hill puppy farm.
We could do 3 Little Pigs sanctuary and have the houses of straw wood and brick. They would all inhabit the one of straw(which actually would be Timothy hay!) then chew up the wood one!

I would definitely be up for that! Sounds like piggy heaven :£m) I would love to change the way the world thinks of animals and change the law regarding animal cruelty I'd make the sentences life and they stay in their cell 24/7 with no visitors ever! Hopefully 1 day things will change x

I'm the kind of person that swerves for butterflies, moves worms out of the driveway so I don't run over them and have rescued a seagull at midnight in a snowstorm on way home from work. I didn't know what I was going to do but I wrapped it up and rode on my lap home from work. He was actually grateful. Made a deal I won't hurt him, he won't hurt me!

I was visiting a friend in Ireland and we popped into a pet store. The poor piggies were in awful conditions (I posted a pic on foursquare and gave them an awful review). They didn't have fresh water (it was soiled), no bedding, not much food. It was heartbreaking but I couldn't do anything about it and it apparently wasn't too uncommon. I wanted to one up a sanctuary and take them home, but I can't!

I had a hamster who became quite poorly and ultimately I had to put her down (she was in so much pain, and all the vet treatments didn't work). No one understood why I put so much effort into helping a hamster when I could buy a new one for £10 or less. No matter how tiny, she was still part of my family and still deserved to live a happy life.

Hehe you sound like me :) I always help animals I find, I once found a cat on the side of the road who had been hit by a car and he was dragging both back legs behind him and he was covered in poo so I picked him up and put his back legs in a carrier bag and tied it around his belly to stop poo going all over and put him in my car rang the rspca and they put me in touch with an emergency vet who opened up the surgery for me (it was about 2am). The vet said he has possibly broken his spine and may have to put him to sleep so I rang them the next morning and they couldn't save him they said the damage was too bad :( I was so upset that someone ran him down and left him suffering at the side of the road! Yes I think people have the attitude of "oh it's dying anyway" towards their pets they can't be bothered because they can put the cage in another room and ignore it, you definitely did the right thing with your hamster, I hate thinking of something in excruciating pain and just been left on its own, and that's what most people do these days I see it all the time on an American show I watch called dogtown (I am in the uk) and this show more time than not it ends happily and they are amazing but the things some people do to those dogs is shocking we need to change the world! X

Poor little cat. Some people just have no heart. Good for you for trying to help her though. At least she ended up somewhere warm and clean even if it was only for a short time.

I hate this kind of people I don't know how they sleep at night, yeah that's what I thought and at least he didn't suffer any longer I was crying for ages after just thinking his owners might never know what happened to him as he wasn't microchipped x

That's frustrating the poor thing wasn't microchipped or wearing anything with the owner listed. I don't understand why people do that either, especially with a pet that openly roams about. You couldn't help that though - you did more than most would have done.

Yeah we always have our cats and dogs done you hear so many stories of people being reunited with their pets thanks to microchiping, and even if things like this happen at least you know what happened to them, thank you I would do it again if I found another or even if I did it I would make sure I took them straight to the vets but some people have no concience x

It makes me annoyed to see pet shops selling cages that are too small claiming they are big enough for two guinea pigs! I was looking for some stuff for Crunchie and Elsa the other day and I saw a man looking at the 80cm cage and heard him say to whoever he was on the phone to 'yes it says this is suitable for two guinea pigs'... I wish I'd had the courage to go up to him and tell him its too small! :(

I agree, they sell them online too I've seen some on Amazon that are "suitable for guinea pigs" and they sell the same ones in pets at home as hamster cages! I have commented on the ones on Amazon warning people not to buy them x
