Uh Oh - blood in urine, advice please!

I was cleaning out the piggies earlier and noticed some very faint pink pee on their cage liner (the one in their run). After some inspection I think i've found the culprit - Mini Mabel had some blood around her vulva :(

She's sitting on my lap at the moment and i'm waiting for her to pee just to confirm. I'll book a vet visit first thing tomorrow for her. I haven't noticed any sqeeking when she pees and I checked the cage over thoroughly - no sign of blood so i'm hoping i've caught it quickly. She peed on me last week and it was fine.

So am I right in thinking possible UTI at the best but potential bladder stone/womb issues at the worst? :... I've just had a little read about a urine sample, where do I get a sterile pot from?

Here was the patch of blood I noticed, it's quite faint but definitely there!

Then when I was checking them all over I wiped this from her girly bits:

If it is a UTI can the other pigs catch it? Poor Mini Mable, please send her healing vibes, this is the first time she has been poorly!
 
Yup - definitely Mabel. She just peed, no noise at all from her but definite blood in it

She's ok in herself, eating, drinking, not fluffed up etc. I'm on an external course tomorrow for work so wont be able to take her to the vets until around 5, is this going to be ok? I know it's better to get her there sooner rather than later re antibiotics :0
 
You can get a sterile container from the vet, or from a pharmacy (I know that the bigger supermarket pharmacies sell them) or you can collect some in a sterile container (a litter tray rinsed with boiling water and left to air dry, or a pyrex dish or something) and suck it up with a clean syringe and leave it in there.

No sample taken in this way is ever going to be completely sterile, but keeping it as clean as possible should help!

Get the sample as fresh as possible, and keep it in the fridge :)
 
Awww poor little girl!

To me, even though I am not an expert but I just feel that you have caught it early? Especially if she is doing ok and not even squeeking whilst peeing.

I hope it is not too serious and not too complicated to treat, I hope she will recover really fast, especially as I feel you have caught it early stages.

Oh dear I am sorry to hear mini Mabel has a problem :( I've seen this once in one of my sows, she didn't have a UTI though. Could it be caused by her having some fun with Sir Finley at all? I found that one of my sows actually had nipped her lady parts whilst eating her poops & it only happened once & I never saw it again. Also when mine had lots of grass in the summer one of them used to have quite pink wee, so is there anything she's eaten that could have caused it?

If she is well in herself, eating etc I would monitor her closely in the next few hours & take her to the vets if she squeaks when weeing or if the blood appears again, it could just be a one off with a simple explanation, hopefully.

I'm assuming i'll get one from there, I could probably get the urine dip too, do you think it would be the same or shall I just leave it to the experts? :)) Obviously I wouldn't be able to interpret but could take it in with me.

I have syringes in their wrapping so they will be ok. Will get pearl barley tomorrow, try to syringe extra fluid and will make sure she is sprightly tomorrow morning for veggie time.

I did consider this as she is perfectly fine, no noise at all when she pees. The new things they have eaten are the Burgess cubes, plantain herbs tonight and hang on a minute I did give them some cherry tomatoes in their veggies? Could that come out in her pee do you think? Fin has been rather excitable over the last few days so I assumed the girls were in season...do all pigs with UTI's squeal when peeing?

Hummm...when i'm getting ready for work tomorrow I could keep her on my lap again and see what her pee is like
 
I found pink wee coming from Cyclops. We got Septrin and Metacam (5 and 7 day course) and he's been fine ever since. IN fact he's been running laps over my shoulders and arms this evening having great fun. I would have thought that getting him checked out quickly is the best option, and get as much fluid into her as you can meantime.

That's reassuring to know :) will check out her pee tomorrow and take her to the vets asap, hopefully I can get her in tomorrow after my course
 
There's no harm booking a vet's visit anyway, 5pm would be fine, as long as she is ok eating etc & looks well. Hopefully it's nothing at all, it could be the tomato, maybe keep her off all red foods until you know what it is for sure. I would get a sample from her & take it in with you, the should be able to check for any blood straight away.

If you are brave enough maybe have a good look at her bits down under & check for any foreign bits (hay etc) & if there is any trauma there as well. I've never had boars so I don't know if it's possible frisky Sir Finley might not have been as gentle as he should have been :red can that happen? Hope someone else can advise about that lol :)

:)) i'm not squirmish, already checked her thoroughly down there! The pinkness is definitely in her urine rather than any hay/cuts etc. I'll keep her on my lap when i'm getting ready and hope she pees tomo, at least then I can see if the blood has gotten worse or not to tell the vet! Thanks for all your help and will defo try and get a sample before I go!
 
Ok, she's peed - it's clear?! malletheadmalletheadmallethead

She's her normal self, popcorns this morning and scoffing down veggies. She did keep looking at me when I took her out this morning as if to say "what on earth are you doing mummy, I want to eat pellets and hay and play with my friends!" It took about half an hour for her to pee and when I put her back Fin was popcorning all over the place :))

So now what? Should I wait and keep watching her pee tonight to check if it's consistently clear or just take her to the vets in case? Could the cherry tomatoes have turned her pee a bit pink? It was the first time I had given them to them...

Right, must go now as I need to catch the tube! See you all later :)
 
I've never noticed tomatoes to cause red pee in my guys.

What I'd do, is try and collect a sample, pop it down to your vet and ask them to dip it for you (or you could ask a nurse at work to do it?). That way you'll know whether theres any white cells/blood etc.

I test my own urine at work as I always get kidney infections when the doctors are closed!
 
Poor Mabel :(

It's good news there is no blood visible this moring and there is no crying when weeing. I would still get the wee tested with a dipstick at the vets as blood isn't always visible in urine with UTI's - but can be tested for it. Jsut to be on the safeside. Let us know how beautiful Mabel gets on with her appointment. Lots of Love and healing vibes to her x

I haven't had a chance to read through the whole thread... But defiantly take her to the vets... Just incase... There may still be blood in the urine but you can't see it...

I'd have her on a low calcium diet aswell...
No spinach, carrots, cabbage etc...

Have you noticed any change with her water intake...?

Hope she's going to be okay... I've got my fingers crossed...!

Bubbles had faint pink wee earlier this year, then his next few wees were clear, although I already had a vets apt booked so took a wee sample and went along to the vets. The dip stick test showed that there was blood still present although not visible to the naked eye.
he had a course of Baytril and a change to his diet - a lower calcium one, and now he's perfectly fine.

I think its still worth taking a sample to the vets just to get it checked out, hopefully she'll be fine and if it is a UTI it sounds like you've caught it early.

Thanks all, i've spoken with the vets earliest appointment is tomorrow at 5.20 and I have to go to a different branch as my normal one has no appointments!

At least she has one though. Mum spoke to the vets where she works (not near to me) and they said it definitely wouldn't be from anything she has eaten. They also said the visible blood can be inconsistent with stones/UTI's.

Will do urine sample late tonight so it's as fresh as it can be. Now I bought some pearl barley, what exactly do I do with it? How much do I use in the pan compared to water or does it not really matter? She's still fine in herself, eating, wheeking etc, no noise when peeing :...

In terms of water intake all my piggies are pretty good drinkers, she hasn't decreased/increased and I would say their diet is low calcium already! They rarely get spinach, kale, cabbage as I try to avoid them given what I've read on here about stones! The main things they get daily are peppers, courgette, cucumber and salad leaves ie lambs lettuce, frisee, radicchio - does anyone know if these salad leaves are high in calcium? They only get carrots occasionally ie every 2-3 weeks and dandelion really is every few months as a treat. What do you think? Does anyone know the calcium in courgettes?

Pearl Barley - 1 part barley, 3 part water just enough Barley to layer the bottom of the pan, boil for 30 - 45 minutes adding water if needed.

Don't panic to much, stones are a different ball game in girls and even then it's unlikely. Your diet is Low calcium.

Thanks Jo :... first time i've potentially got a sick pig and just want to do the best for her! I didn't sleep at all last night worrying rolleyes with this water how much should I aim for her to take in tonight, and can I use tonight's batch tomorrow?

Will refresh myself with your P thread as it's probably all in there! Can you over do it with fluids?
 
Just give her as much as she'll take with any luck she'll like it don't over do the fluids though as it can affect the urine results. In all honesty I wouldn't give her any fluids until the vets checked her urine reason being my vet had to check P's kidney's because his urine was so dilute, his urine was dilute because I'd been giving him fluids, it also flushed the crystals from his bladder I know this because as soon as I stopped the crystals where back in his urine.

I would start giving her fluids once you know what your dealing with.

PS - Pebbles and Wilma have both had blood in there urine, which has cleared up with antibiotics.

Ok, thanks so much for the advice. I've got it on boil anyhow but wont give it to her - if necessary could I use tonight's water tomorrow once I know what i'm dealing with? Am I right in thinking Septrin is better than Baytril for UTI's?
 
If she does end up on barley water and doesn't like it (Cameo hated it!), add a tiny dash of ribena to it - it'll go down a treat! (and it has vit C in it :)))

Get the ordinary one - the tiny amount of sugar in it will be better than any artificial sweetners and stuff!

Works for Baytril too. That stuff isn't very nice! Measure out the amount of baytril you need, pop it into a little egg cup, add a tiny amount of ribena, then suck it back up into the syringe!

I'm sure little miss Mabel will be as good as gold though!

:)) Dottie was a dream pig when she had Baytril, not sure how Mabel will react but she's perfect when I cut her nails so we'll see!
 
Sorry to be a pain in the butt but I was just having another look at Mabel and spotted this...i've wiped it with warm water but it wont wash off and looks a bit like a graze....

Your pigs diet is identical to mine less the courgettes! Glad to know I'm not overdoing the calcium :)

That photo is interesting, maybe she caught herself when grabbing a poop from her rear? That's what I think mine did once, years ago as they didn't get a UTI.
I would definitely get the urine sample before giving her the pearl barley water in case it ruins the sample. Don't overdo it, just give her what she fancies :) If she goes off her food when on antibiotics yo can also offer the pearl barley mush left over after you have drained the liquid, lots of them love that. I would make mine up fresh each time, it will keep in the fridge for a little while but don't syringe it stone cold, allow it to warm up a bit to room temperature first.
