Hello all

Newbie here :) I am Emma and I am right at the outset going to be a disappointment to all of you! Let me explain.....

I decided to give a home to 2 guinea girls, my youngest son is autistic and loves animals I really wanted a pet for him to interact with (with help) and after years of owning hammy sand gerbils I decided piggies were the way to go in all the girls joined a happy home me my hubby and our 3 children aged 6,5 and 3 our cat (who hates the indoors so we see little of her other than to be her slave for food!) and our 2 gold fish.

So all was ok we bought a massive p at h cage, food, hay, veggies, cage wash, water bottle, teeth grinders, treats, tubes, tunnels, hides, house, bedding, wood shavings and of course our 2 wonderful girls

Yet now after finding this forum I feel so unprepared which is why you are all properly rolling your eyes right now!

Any advice you can offer would be wonderful and more importantly I just wanted to say hello and say sorry in advance for any dumb questions i may ask in the future! :)

Hello, and :wel:. We are all piggie mad on here. People shouldn't judge you so don't be hard on yourself. Hope you find lots of helpful information and tips from experienced piggie keepers on here. There are lots of threads including one on how to upload photos (I'm useless at that)

I have managed to work out the pictures so our little girls are now on show

We set up the cage and left them alone for over 24 hours and then had our first cuddles which is where these pics are from I only had them out for 10 mins in the aim not to stress them out though they seemed so happy and chilled out :) they have both been happy running around eating drinking and talking a little bit
 
Hi and welcome.Sure you will be fine.You are doing great.Enjoy them.I have had mine nearly a year and still learning.How big is the cage?Are they getting veg and unlimited hay every day?How old are they? I have nine soon to be 10 sows and they make me laugh every day

Madguinealady- the cage is pets at home one I think a ferplast 100? ( they said it would be great but I worry about the size now :( )

The girls are little 12 weeks old they said

They have unlimited hay fresh each day fresh water in bottle and pellet food at all times I have also been giving vegs a small cup full fresh at around 8 am then again at 5 pm

I wonder about the pellet food? Should it be out all the time ( it is a bowl,full ) or should I just put a small cup size amount twice a day with the veggies?

We have all started at the beginning... ;)

I would recommend to serve the pellets twice a day, but either way works. Some youngsters can pee in the pellet bowl, so if you just top it off, you can end up with a smelly mess.
You serve unlimited pellets as long as your little girls are growing quickly for the first few months. When their weekly growth rate is slowing down, you can start very, very gradually to reduce the amount of pellets to the half to handful of pellets that mature guinea pigs over 12-15 months old on a good veg diet (ca. 50g/1 cupful per piggy per day in as many servings as you like) need. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk...veg-and-fruit-list-with-vitamin-c-grading.42/

We recommend to weigh any healthy piggy weekly and any ill or suspected ill piggy daily. That is an important tool in monitoring their health. See the vet if the weight loss is over 50g/2 oz. Take your time to take it all in and to work your way through all the information at the top of the Care sections; don't hesitate to ask questions. Pet keeping is a lifelong learning curve. In many ways, your gorgeous little girls will teach you what works and what not!
 
The minimum recommended size for two sows is 120 x 60 so when they get bigger (and you will be gobsmacked at how much they grow) will be below minimum.You weren't to know this, I did the same when I first got my two girls.The more space they have the less likely they will fall out.I have one group of 4 in 15 square foot and a group of five in 19 square feet but I am lucky that I have a spare room for them.I would be tempted to take the cage back and see if I could get my money back or part exchange for a bigger one.You could always join another cage or a run to it when they get bigger.I have c&c cages now that are big enough for me to sit in but I appreciate that not everyone has the space to do this.
