I introduced one of my boars Elvis to my group of sows with a view to him living with them permanently (6 of them). They got on fine for a day but today I had to throw a towel over Elvis and my oldest sow Cookie to separate them as they were fighting. It started off as him rumbling at her then they circled around each other then the teeth chattering started. The teeth chattering got louder and louder then they both practically raised themselves up onto their back legs and flew face first into each other with their mouths open. Should I separate them? No injuries have been inflicted yet but they keep going for each other.

I have no experience with sows I'm afraid, but if it looks like it is that serious can you perhaps put Cookie with one or more of the other females and leave the others with Elvis?

I'm just not sure if I'm overreacting or not. I thought with all the teeth chattering and then them lunging at each other that it was a full scale fight but as soon as I threw a towel over they both ran to opposite sides of the cage then didnt bother with each other again. They havent caused each other any injury so I'm not sure if it just looked worse than it really was. I suppose I could put Cookie with another sow, I guess I just wanted to avoid that as my 6 sows are happy living together.
Thank you for replying :)

Update

I didnt remove Elvis from the girls overnight and opted to stay in the livingroom to keep an eye on things and see what happened with Elvis and Cookie. They dont seem to be bothering with each other now so I may have overreacted to the situation and they were probably just sorting out their differences. Will keep an eye on them for a while to make sure but for the meantime Elvis is staying where he is with all the girls :)

Ah I'm so pleased to hear they are getting on better :-)

Dior and Versace did the same thing the week before I bought them to you and actually lunged at each other but hopefully they've been fine since and Versace was just seeing if she was tough enough to take over as head piggy but found out that she wasn't!

My two have been separated for the last two days and they seem happier but I feel like they dont have much space. we're putting the vet bed in tonight so hopfully they can learn to live together on the new neutral territory!

How's Elvis getting on with the other girls? Is he enjoying himself?

xx

Hi Danielle,
Are you keeping your two separate now then or going to try them again? Dior and Versace havent had a single tiff since they've been here so think it must have been as you said and they were just sorting some stuff out.
Elvis has settled in well, he and Cookie seemed to be fighting for top spot but think they may have sorted it out now. He gets on with all of them until he starts trying to mount them then they tell him off.
Have been giving baths today so am not too popular at the moment but some of the girls seemed to be wet and stinky at their back ends so think Elvis has been peeing on them when he mounts them. I'm having to clean out the cage every day at moment because Elvis is creating such a smell. Dont know if thats normal or if its my heightened sense of smell due to being pregnant lol.
Hope you're well and good luck with Ace and Liddell x>>

Hi! You sound like you had fun and games while I was away!

Stink is pure undiluted testosterone! It will get a bit better with time and after the first big season, but it is part and parcel of an excited boy...

Sorry, boy pees at girlsto tell her he fancies her and girls pees at boy to tell him to p*** off... Girls will be rather smelly for the first few weeks, too.

I'm glad that Elvis and Cookie have sorted out their differences and know now where they stand. Things WILL quieten down, but it may take a few days, and you will get the odd testoterone overload. It will get rarer the older the boy.
