The herd are indoors only. They are currently in their pen in the living room, and because the door is open I'm watching them and not moving for fear of cats coming in.

I'm putting Snugglesafe pads in the fridge for tomorrow (can they be frozen?)

Fudge is off to the vets in the morning, and is going alone because she's a stroppy, attitude filled teen piggy who hates everyone in close spaces. The last time she went to the vet with a friend I ended up buying another carrier because she was squabbling with Sweetie!

I put a tile in yesterday... they looked at it and have so far avoided it ! Curtains have been closed all day, Windows open, air con unit on for a bit.... lots of sleeping done today by Gladys & Pip!

Can I please remind our members to make sure that your guinea pigs have either good tree shade or otherwise have a good-sized area of double shade in their runs at all times to protect them against the heat. Please be aware that any plastic pigloo is bascially a heat trap in full sun and not enough protection; it needs to be kept out of the sun.

The same goes for any hutches - guinea pigs can die from heat stroke!

Please also consider giving your long-haired/thick coated guinea pigs are summer haircut now, so they do not have to walk around with the equivalent of wearing a ski suit on a tropical beach! If you do not want to give up the long-haired look (although that will have grown back by autumn time), then consider at least to cut the undercoat short to give your piggies relief. You will notice that they are suddenly a lot livelier and more active when wearing their "summer clothes"!

My two have had their frozen water bottles out. Jon is the only pig that I've had to actively seek it out and lay next to it (or stand on it!)

It's only partially covered as I'm watching them with it. Normally it would be tightly wrapped so they can't get at the plastic.

@Jaycey Jon looks like he's saying "mine". What a gorgeous piggy.
Yesterday my piggys couldn't go out until very late afternoon because it was too hot, they stayed in their cool north facing room for most of the day. Last night we had heavy rain and thunder - today has been overcast and cold and the ground is damp. Those cute little faces keep looking at me every time I walk past their cages, the expression says, "you've forgotten something". I don't understand the British weather certainly couldn't explain it to anyone.

A vet nary nurse once told me the best hot weather tip is to put a water bottle in the freezer wait till its completely frozen then wrap in a towel and put in there cage or run it gives them the option to more away or closer put a few round the cage and see if they like it

Thank you. You'll find that tip listed in our hot weather guide link in the first post with lots more tips on how to keep your piggies cool.

Quick question - not sure if it's worth a thread for but what about cucumbers? Really cools the girls down but I've been feeding at least a slice each everyday for the past few days/week or so and didn't realise you shouldn't feed it so often. Should I just feed it anyway for now? It's boiling

Providing cool, regularly refreshed water is as good as watery veg that can cause diarrhea if overfed, and healthier. There are lots more really helpful and practical tips in the link in the first post!

When it's this hot my piggies get plenty of shade.

it is great you provide double shade, but please bring your guinea pigs inside during the hottest hours, especially in temperatures of close to and over 30 C with full sun as the surrounding air is still oven temperature.

:agr: it's 29°C in the shade in our garden :(

Also would it be safe to lay down a damp small towel or cloth in the cage? Peppa was lying on the damp newspaper before I chucked it. Asked first as if seemed like it would encourage an URI, but would damp toweos hung on the cage too?

i wet a big bath towel and place it over the run,ive 4 ice pods that i put in freezer, but freezing a water bottle will work the same.Change drinking water bottles every 3 hours, ive also given each piggie a slice of water melon, but this is the first time any have had melon this year.

My piggies are indoors. We have a fan running, and they've got a legit piece of marble I found in the garden to lie on! Is it ok to give them ice cubes to lick, or would that be too big a temperature change for them?

I wouldn't give them ice cubes to lick - the suggestion of a frozen water bottle wrapped up in a towel is a good one
