Hi everyone,

This morning I was cleaning out my guinea pigs and I noticed that my Mushroom had a sore eye. On closer inspection I could see a raised bit on her eye. I took her to the vets straight away and they put green dye in the eye to look around and said it looks like a scratched eye.

He gave her some antibiotics orally in a tube and some drops in her eye and said I need to continue this for the next few days.

Has anyone ever had this with their guinea pigs? A poked eye? I have a feeling it was from hay but I don’t know. She’s her usual self eating etc but I’m worried about her.

Will she be ok? I have to take her back on Tuesday? Is there anything else I can do to help her?

Thank you

Also, how long does it take for the green dye to go away? X

I know nothing to do with guinea pig eyes, but I know someone will see this soon and give you some good advice. It does sound like your vet has done the right thing though. 👍

Haypokes are very common and you and your vet have done exactly the right things :)
Catching and treating these things fast is key to a good outcome so hopefully she will be fine! Not sure how long the dye will take to go but that's nothing to worry about.

Both of my boys have had haypokes. It is incredibly common. It’s not nice but as she has seen a vet and is receiving treatment she will be fine.
Both my boys were better within a week of using the antibiotic eye drops.

Haypoke is very common.
The dye my vet used was orange last time.
Jemimah had a very fetching orange streak which disappeared in a few days.

Well done getting to the vet so promptly.
Have fun getting the eye drops in.
I found bribery helped - usually a chunk of cucumber.
Hope her eye heals quickly

Mine have had haypokes quite a bit. It's a hazard of them loving to run into hay and eat it! The green dye will only last a few days. Was Mushroom given Isathal?

Yes, isathal drops x

Any tips for avoiding hay poke in the future? I guess it’s difficult when all they eat is hay! X

No chance of avoiding hay poke unfortunately.
Given that piggies eat it and play in it the wonder is we don’t have more.
Just be vigilant as you clearly are

We need to give her some drops in an hour so will try spinach - her favourite thing! X

The only thing you can do is try and avoid coarse hays. You can't avoid hay pokes completely.... but you're less likely to get them with softer hays,.

This is what I do, alfalfa King Timothy is the worst for being hard hay. But my pigs love it

Good luck. I've had to do it twice in my years of owning piggies. Willow was a willing patient but Lily is much more fiesty. I found simply holding her to me and holding her head while she was on the worktop was the only way to do it. She was ok with me doing that after about 3-4 days probably when her eye started feeling better

I’ve just given her her drops and the liquids gone over the eye a little bit around the eye area. Is this ok? X the green seems to be going now x

That’s all fine. As long as it went in the eye it’s common for a bit to come out. If you want, you can just give the area below her eye a little wipe with a damp cotton wool ball, but it’s not really necessary.
The dye will be gone in a day or so. (I’ve some staining my hand as I type as I’ve been at the vets with an eye problem today, too and the dye got on my hand).
Well done for getting the eye drop in. I find coming with the tube from slightly behind the eye works best but my piggies are pretty good about having drops etc as most have had some treatment over the years.

I find that opening and closing the eye with my finger and thumb works best for keeping eyedrops in.
