Hello all,

My little Edgar has had a URI and unfortunately the infection had spread and has resulted in an ulcerated eye

A trip to the vets last night as he was very poorly resulted in shots of Baytril and antiflam and fingers and toes crossed.

He has vets again this morning. His swelling in his face and eye has gone down alot and he is alot better today. Still eating and drinking well.

I have Isathal eye drops twice a day for him and I am going to ask for another shot of anti inflam and Baytril and baytril to bring home.

What I want to ask is has anyone else had an ulcerated eye and if it has cleared up what the long term effects were? He wasn't showing signs of feeling in the eye last night but today he is and it's now open again and hes blinking and flinching when I go near it. It's still obviously red and sore with some crust.

Thanks :)

DSC_0037.webp Last night his whole face was bright red and swollen and this has gone down alot. His eye was bulging and closed.

This is his eye this morning very very less swollen but ob still very sore and clouded.

Aww poor little Edgar, Get well soon , speedy recovery little man :luv:

My little Orca can sympathize she had a hay poke late Saturday night when i got in & was in the vets first thing yesterday morning. Orca has Isathal drops 2 x daily too.
i was bathing her eye in slightly salted, boiled & cooled water until i could get to the vets, it went down quite a bit, but i could see the poke mark right in the centre of the eye, it was all cloudy, hers more closed than open & watering too.

one of my previous piggies had a grass seed under her eyelid & it was rubbing on her eyeball, she was looking a right mess the day after the vets & drops, so i took her back in the following day too, when we found the offending seed. but her eyeball changed shape sort of oval/rugby ball looking, all bloodshot & cloudy/white & bulging a little, the vet was concerned she would lose her eye, but with the drops it healed up nicely within about 2 weeks, but she always had a little scar there.

if Edgars is just an infection with no poke mark, hopefully it will go back to normal as hers did. i think all of mine have either had Fulcithmic?/Isathal or Tiacil drops & always done well with them.
yesterdays vet told me to keep the isathal in the fridge & it would last longer than the month that was suggested on the box for emergencies.

healing vibes being sent your way
love the girls & I xx

Bless him, the fact he has no hair has probably made things look far worse as you can see it all so clearly as well the surrounding inflammation.

The fact he's responded well to antibiotics and metacam is a great sign. I'd ask for the metacam to be given at home too as pain relief and anti inflammatory is very important.

The combination of those and the isathal should do the trick. Any sign of the eye becoming dry then you can ask for some lubrithal which is just a lubricant drop. A dry eye will cause friction when closed which won't help the healing process.

My sow had an ulcer from a hay poke which took 8 long weeks to heal but it got there in the end with isathal, lubrithal and metacam.

Remember to give probiotics 1-2 hours after each antibiotic dose to prevent any upset tummy.

All the best. He's gorgeous btw x

Thanks @Adelle his late brother was a cutie too. My little ginger Monsters.

I always have Metacam at home anyway as a back up so continuing with that.

He's also on Avipro that he has with his veggies and doesn't mind eating.

He's alot better today at first because his chest was so bad we thought we would lose him but got the vets straight away so caught it in time.

Luckily the Baytril doesn't seem to be bothering him and he even takes it voluntarily from the syringe! Surprised since it's so bitter!

Thanks for all the advice guys appreciated.

He's alot better today and the cloudyness of the eye has def shrunk a bit. Little trooper.
