My 5 week old boar, Dixon, is all fluff and belly at the moment. He's a mischievous little menace and his antics are wearing off on his 5 month old housemate, Bear. Which, as strange as it sounds, I'm very happy about. Bear has always been way too well behaved for my liking so adding a little naughtiness into the mix is quite interesting.

I've come across a little problem with Dix in the last few days. Like I said, he's all fluff at the moment and this long fluff on his belly keeps getting caught in his willy. I'm having to pull it out 3-4 times a day. The fur is still attached to him when I pull it out so it's not shed hair and debris getting caught. But when it is caught his whole willy comes out and stays out, looking very red and quite violent. After pulling the hair away it returns inside.

Is there anything I can do, would it be wise to cut the hair or maybe give it a little shave around the bottom half of his belly and privates?
He's long haired and it will carry on getting longer and I fear the problem will just escalate.
Both guineas live inside.

Hi and welcome!

I would recommend to keep your little boy cut very short around the bum end and keep the sides above the ground. You can give him either an overall short haircut (especially in summer) or just keep the hair short under the up most layer, so he can enjoy being naughty boy. Unfortunately, boys have a tendency to collect all kinds of stuff in their bits, so a weekly check and clean out is recommended. Also keep an eye on their grease gland, which is about an inch above their bits on the bum end.

Thank you very much. I'll get the scissors on to him. I dare say I'm going to be in the bad books and I'll have a grumpy pig on my hands, hehe.

When you are triming hold the fur at the base so you don't pull it as you cut, this will minimise wriggles and moaning... The joys of piggie owning :)

I cut all my long haired boys hair on their bellies to prevent it getting stuck, I also trim around the bottom of their coats and keep it shorter at the back by under cutting it so the under layer is short leaving a slightly longer top layer. What breed is he? I have perus, alpacas and a lunkarya, loved my long haired boys :)

Dixon is an Abyssinian & Sheltie cross.
Bear is a Dalmatian Ridgeback & Peruvian cross.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Dixon all grown up. I'm so used to a short haired pig, long haired is all very new :-D

I love all piggies but long haired have my heart, something about them. I have some abby sheltie crosses ones took the sheltie more and has one rosette the other has more abby in him with a sweeping fringe :))

I know what you mean, Dixon is pretty much all Abyssinian, completely straight and all fine fluff at the moment, he takes after his Dad whereas his Mum was all rosetted, same at his two sisters and brother.
I've just cut his hair, I can tell he's going to be a nightmare when he's older, I'm lucky he's still small enough for me to grasp and hold steady in one hand.
That's another thing I love, they all have unique personalities. It's incredible!
