Hi everyone.
I have had my 2 boars about 2 weeks now. The oldest one is about 5 months old and the youngest about 10 weeks. They get along great but I know the oldest is the more dominant out of the 2.

Whenever I go near the hutch, the youngest just squeaks a little but does sometimes come closer to me to have a sniff. The oldest sometimes makes a noise that I can only describe as sounding like the predator off the film and he has his head low to the ground.

I have taken this noise to be a, I don't want to be picked up noise, as when he realises I am only there to give him a stroke or food it generally stops. He will also come closer to me for a sniff and even came to sit in between my feet while I was in the run with them but hates being picked up but when I am giving him a cuddle, he will eat his favourite leaves from my hand and will talk away to me.

I read an article earlier though about wild guinea pigs and they have said, this type of behaviour is being submissive. I am now really unsure what this means. I am still taking it to be a, I don't want to be picked up noise but would please like other peoples opinions.

Thanks very much.

Haha, I know the preditor sound well! My dominant sow does it a LOT every time shes in season. I think that's what's generally referred to as rumbling. Hubby amd I always joke about Predator being in our house when shes doing it. I'm pretty sure it's a dominance sound though, not submissive. Definitely is with my sow.

I would also take it to mean "don't come near me, dont pick me up". It's kind of a warning sound. Him trying to sound scary so you leave him alone.
Guinea pigs in general hate being picked up. It's their prey instinct because predators generally snatch them up to take them away and eat them.

We were actually thinking of changing his name to Predator lol I am glad I am reading the noise correctly and thanks for your opinion. Sometimes though I do have to pick him but it's normally for him to go into his run so he is normally friends with me again afterwards, until it comes to putting him back in the hutch though lol.

There will always be times you have to handle them. They dont like it but will learn to deal with it over time. Though I'm stil waiting for mine to figure out I'm not out to hurt them...

I'm so glad I found this post! My 2 boars are doing this to each other all the time - rumbling, head low, walking slow and pushing their butt out. I assumed it was a dominance thing... do they ever stop doing it? (I'm scared they'll start fighting!) :hmm::blink:

I thought it meant piggy is annoyed at something your doing.

sport_billy that would be great!

I am sure my girlies have full blown conversations with me...I'm speaking English (of some description) and they are talking Guinea pig.

If they ever speak English I will let you know...

For some naughty reason my laptop cannot play those guinea pig noises. Very frustrating to watch the video at the end but not hear it even with the volume on full ...

After Bumble died my house was deathly quiet - he would rumble around the cage at his wife and he would burr when I gave him a back massage - now I have baby Humphrey the house is alive again as he rumbles at Bumbalina next door .

I can't get the noises to play either. One of mine has started to make a noise when he sees me and its veg time. He runs around like he is excited at the same time. Mistook a finger for veg as well, naughty thing lol. Will teach me for not washing my hands after preparing everything!
