Hi there,
My guinea pig sadly passed away about 10 minutes ago and I'm still in shock, iv posted straight on here as I need to know what it was that caused her death. She was fine today at 12. This morning when I went into go give them their food pellets. I went back in at 9.30 and she was lying in the corner looking very unwell. I automatically picked her up in her fleece and bought her str8 inside. I put her in a carrier, it had a hot water bottle under 2 newspapers and a blanket, so you could feel the warmth but not 2 much. Then I noticed a foul smell so checked her behind. I found a very reddy/brown mush coming from, what I'm 80% sure was her lady bits. It seemed to have blood in it but not sure. The only thing I noticed was a very very foul smell! Within the half an hour she had eaten a few pellets and a tiny bit of hay, and she drank a fair bit too. I decided she was ok so popped 2 the loo and washed my hands, by the time I got back she had passed,
If any body knows what this could be please please hlp me as I have 6 other pigs and don't want them to go the same way!
Sorry for the essay!

Oh I don't know anything about her passing but wanted to say how sorry I am honey.

What a shock!

Thanks every1, no she wasn't old at all. She wasn't even 1 yet its her birthday in october! Iv had her since she was 8 weeks old and she's never been poorly before

I'm so sorry to hear this, what a shock for you. Sleep well little one.

Thats really sad :(

I would call the vet tomorrow and ask if they know what the cause could have been, could she have been pregnant?

I wonder if the discharge were from the digestive system and not from the reproductive organs?
If that were so it seems like a very severe form of enteritis for which there is no treatment, no cure and the outcome is inevitably death. Over the years I have lost a few pigs to this condition, it is characterised by a rapid onset, a revolting smell and a blood and mucous stained form of diarrhoea.
If this is what your pig had there is nothing that you or anyone else could have done to help. I hope that may be of some consolation.
Why one pig in a group will be affected and none of the others is open to debate.
It will be sufficient for you to give the hutch/enclosure and bottles etc a thorough clean.

It did occur to me that it could have been a miscarriage or a prolapse but the signs you described do not seem to fit the conditions. A prolapse would be physically obvious and so would the products of a miscarriage.

My male g.pig did manage to get into her run for about 2 minutes when I was cleaning them out about 4 months ago, but wouldn't she have had a baby before now if she had been pregnant? I didn't noticed them "doing the dirty" as he just ran round wild! I will deffinately ring the vets tomorrow and ask them what they think!

It just hasn't sunk in yet as it happened about 1/2 hour after I found her poorly :(

So sorry to hear that,:( sending you hugs, sounds like you did everything you could have possibly done!:rose

So sorry to hear of your loss... RIP little one, Rainbow Bridge awaits....

I'm so sorry for your loss. I dont know what could have possibly been the issue.
But piggies are well known for hiding their illnesses. Its best to keep an eye on them frequently. Again, I'm sorry to hear about your little one. Popcorn at the rainbow bridge now piggy. :( You will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss, Kelly. It is heartbreaking and utterly confusing when they go without much prior warning.

Rest well, sweet piggie. xx

So sorry for your loss, it comes as such a shock when they go suddenly like that. At least she is at rest now, poor girl.:(

thanks everyone,
thankfully the other pigs are ok today, so il just keep a close eye on them for the next few weeks
