I know I haven't been on in a while, but we've had our fair share issues the past month.

First, we got the new cage so the boys have one like the girls.
Then, we had to move my room around. IN the process of doing so, the cage ramp was left open.
We lost star for a good fifteen minutes.
AFTER finding star, we got everyone put back because the room was finished. Everyone seemed fine.
I gave everyone their nightly veggies, they ate them and were happy about it.

The next morning I went to college, got home and... Unfortunately, cupcake had passed away. Why? I don't know. I don't know what happened. She was around 4-5 years old. She was just.... Gone.

My grandmother said it was from old age, none of the other pigs were sick. But, guinea pigs can live up to eight years!

I cleaned the cages out, listened to the others breathing. Looked in their eyes, their noses. Nothing seemed wrong. Apollo even attempted to pee on me :/...

Now? I woke up this morning and Squiggles has a cough! A loud one, too. His Wheek is fading and raspy and I'm at a loss.

We're looking up vets when I get back from class today and hopefully can schedule all five pigs in. If I can get a quote from the vet I'll probably be selling some stuff I got to pay for the bill.

So... That's my updates . Not pleasant ones, though. :/

Poor cupcake :'( Sorry to hear

*sends healing vibes through the interwebs for squiggles* I hope he is ok and that the others are still pigging along

I'm sorry to hear about Cupcake ((Hugs)) RIP Cupcake xx

Hope Squiggles makes a speedy recovery x>>

I am so sorry for your loss! How upsetting!

Sadly, due to the indiscriminate mass breeding of guinea pigs, 4-5 years is nowadays a far more realistical age projection.

Like with humans, stroke and heart attacks can happen at any time without warning, leaving a loving owner shaken to the core and wondering where they have gone wrong.

As to your other piggies, it sounds very much like URI (upper respiratory tract infection) and needs to be checked and treated by a vet, the quicker the better. If your vet is diagnosing URI, please ask for a one off of dose of a diuretic of furosemide or another diuretic, too, to help ease the breathing.

Thank you all so much. I /just/ got back from class and now I'm waiting a half hour till the vet gets back from lunch to ask if they take piggies.

Good news- I still have money left for their vet visits. So, I'm going to go marching into the clinic with two pet carriers with five piggies. @)

Everyone seems to be okay for now, their squealing upstairs to get their veggies {:| . So, I'll keep you all posted when we get back!

OI... Boy do I have a twist in the plot...

First off, though, lemme explain what is happening

Everyone is just fine- the vet said the coughing is just signs of 'old age' and his lungs sound fine, there's no runny nose and his temp was fine so he couldn't administer antibiotics....

Now here's thw twist.

I put mookie up on the table and he was looking her over. and he got really quiet, then just stared at me like {:| and I was like... What?!

Apparently....

...

Mookie is a boy

mallethead mallethead mallethead mallethead

NOOOOOOOO!

I had 'her'...'he'...' IT ' in with the girls! I thought She... was a she but she isn't a she she is a HE!

....

8... So now? Now what? I don't know. Mook is in his own cage... And I'll be monitoring the girls until further notice.

How long have you had Mook for? Are you sure the vet is correct? Take a picture of his/her bits we can help.

Since he was born. he's six months old and was with the other six month old girl and the 2 month old girl...

He showed me how to sex them, and he pushed down on his stomach...area? and his penis came out... I told him what I did and he said that when I tried to sex them, it was just too early and you couldn't really tell. But now he's mature so it was easier.

I'm sorry about Cupcake. Unfortunately, although guinea pigs 'can' live to be 7 or 8, many don't. It's just like people 'can' live to be 100, but it's not in the cards for everyone. It doesn't make it any easier.

As for the girl who is a boy, I too think it's amazing that you haven't had babies yet if she is indeed a he... are there really obvious testicles that the girls clearly lack? My experience is it's hard to mis-sex adult animals, since the boys quite obviously have bits that the girls do not!

Oh dear I'm sorry about Cupcake :( R.I.P little piggy

And you do sound like you have been very busy. I am glad that your other piggies are ok and I am amazed how you haven't had baby piggies everywhere...Bizarre @)

Nope! he looks just like a girl externally, which is why I was at a loss. It wasn't until the vet actually showed me everything he had that I was honestly confused, haha!
I tried to find my camera to get some pictures, but we moved everything for Halloween. I'll find it though and get some tomorrow..

SO, just a little update everyone. The sniffles are gone with Squiggles...

And...

I have a pregnant guinea pig on my hands... AGAIN.

-_-

I picked up Clover and I can feel the head on her right side. Yaay~ mallethead

I've kept guinea pigs all my (very long) life and I've never had one live longer than five years.

I've never known where the eight years comes from as a generalisation.
